Yeah it reminds me of the “waiters” at piccadilly.
Cafeterias like Luby’s, Piccadilly, etc. are in a different category in my book. Those waiters/waitresses carry trays for elderly diners all day and I’m sure those folks tip like the Great Depression is still a thing. They earned a tip from me whether they helped me or not.

Yeah, but isn't a taco maker getting aboot $25/hr., plus tips, in NYC now?

My father-in-law tips $5 any time they go out to eat..and their bill is usually in the $100 to $200 range

I went to a car wash last year after arriving in a small town in Ga. The kid took my card, swiped it and asked do I want to leave a tip, so I told him to put a $2 tip on, assuming someone would, I don’t know, squirt some bug juice on the front of my truck, or spray some tire jizz on or something ….Nope! Nothing. Nada. I tipped these ding dongs to swipe my card and give me a hand signal as I entered. The machine does the washing and I did the vacuum.

I think you were in 10% tip territory.
Was coming here to post this.
You were basically at a buffet with that level of service but at a buffet you’d have at least gotten a drink refill

I really don't like all the "trendy" counter service places that have the tip pop up. "The screen is going to ask you a question" then they flip the screen and the options are. "18.5%, 20% 25%" and I have to fill my own drink and pick my food up at the counter?
It’s annoying and just everywhere.
Can’t even grab a link of boudin without having to be asked to tip. I hit “no tip” with ease because I’m not paying extra for you to do your basic job.

Not sure if you marrying his daughter was a great thing to save you money or a terrible thing in that she would also be cheap

I ordered off of a touch screen at the table, a different person brought me my food. Nobody checked on me,
Hell no, and that’s coming from a man that waited tables for way too many years. There was a skill to waiting tables and making customers feel like true guest of the restaurant. That is lost on restaurants like Chilis that are moving to that model. That’s fine if that’s how they choose to do business, but I wouldn’t tip shite.
I tip on how a place makes me feel. If I feel valued and that my business is appreciated, I’ll tip damn near any type business. If they don’t, than I won’t, and that also goes for any type business.

I might tip a buck or two for that service but not 20% for bringing me a water.

My wife is nothing like her parents, thankfully.

My dad under tips too. I always bring cash with me when we go out to eat so I can sneak some on the table when we are leaving

I feel sorry for the Chili’s on Constitution’s waitstaff. Aside from being assaulted by tPOS, imagine the non tipping that goes on there.

I can't remember the last time I ate at a Chili's. It's probably been over 10 years.

I’m a giving type person. I’ve bought coffees for retail employees, brought back fast food from places, all kinds of small but extra things for clerks/servers/cashiers in the past. I like to do that. But I damn sure ain’t giving my money away to stuff like that, random charities or to pan handlers. I know that’s different because of the tipping history, but you still have at least try to earn it.

I’m 100 in favor of the touch screens at fast food places and the Chili’s establishments. Also wouldn’t have tipped. People at those type places should be in a flat hourly rate.

I don't care if it's sincere - or not. If I'm out somewhere and you want a tip - you better at least put out the effort to make me feel like you give a crap about my table.

Probably the 90's or early 2000's for me. Back then Chili's was considered the new cool thing. Great happy hour with surprisingly good margaritas.

There’s a salad station in town. $12 for a fricking salad and a drink that I made my self and it is asking for a tip. No thanks. I’ll just not come back so I don’t have to answer stupid questions.

When I was in my early 20s we used to go to the one off of Siegen by Top Golf a lot but only for the 2 for 1 beers. It was sort of our pregame place to get a cheap buzz
