Take a cheap car battery with you or booster cables so you can be sure to check all electronics and see if engine will at least turn over. If it’ll turn over smooth it’s likely a simple problem to get it running.

Don’t rely on him to have a good battery in it. A lot of people pull the “well the battery is dead” to try to sell you a hunk of junk without you being able to see exactly what you’re going to need to fix.

430 MEL V8 until ‘66

Not that big of a deal.

Bodywork and all the electrical peripherals would really run the tab up.

All hobbies cost something, you probably won’t have another chance to get in the game cheaper with minimal work/cost necessary to get it right.

I came close to getting a ‘61 model 20 years ago, glad I didn’t now. But that’s a personal choice, good luck.

Update:

The last titled owner is long dead and the car has changed hands at least twice with no title. To get a title in LA, I would have to locate the heirs and see if they would be willing to assist in filing for a duplicate title or sign a bill of sale.

That or I have to hook up with a tow yard and go through the abandoned property procedure, which carries some risk.

Seems like too much trouble so I am passing on it unless something changes.

Track down the heirs, get the title and demand he give you back “your car” at no charge.

My sister had one of those for a while. Thing is huge, so parking might become an issue in some places. If restored correctly it'll be well worth it. If you ever get tired of it you can easily get a bundle for it.

Yup, no guarantees there.

Pass is the right move.

The present “owner” might have less-than-honorable intentions.

The OG owner owned the Lincoln Mercury dealership here for years so the family is known. Just not sure how hard it would be to track them all down.

I regret it almost every day.

Yea that was before their desirability shot up and the prices skyrocketed.

Sadly I am passing on this one because of the title issues on top of the mechanical uncertainty brought up in this thread. The little bit of visible body rust and body work doesn't bother me.

He can check the underside of the seats. Look for corrosion on the seat springs, and the hog rings where the upholstery attaches to the seat frame.

That'd be a hard pass if anything other than very minimal surface rust.

Cool as they look, it makes you wonder just how many hands have been smashed on those doors.

Seeing that car brings back memories. When I was a kid in the 70s an early 80s, I had a great uncle who lived in Rockmont, GA. His name was Emory, he was a WWII vet and collected Lincoln Continentals like I collect models. I think he had like 5 or 6 of them ranging in age from the 1940s to late 1960s. He babied those cars. They were his pride and joy. Every time he and my great aunt (her name was Evelyn but everyone called her “Aunt Toots”) came to Alabama to visit, they’d dive one of his prized Lincolns. We’d oftentimes go stay with them for a couple of weeks during the summer and on Sunday’s after Church he’d take us for a drive in one of his Lincoln’s. He had one just like this except it was black. It was my favorite because of the suicide doors and the fact it was a convertible.

I will offer this even though I've seen you crap unnecessarily on other posters here, because I'm a nice guy nevertheless. In Louisiana there is a procedure to petition a smaller court for a declaration of title. Talk to a lawyer. My understanding is it is not complicated. I think just say the title owner is deceased or prove it and that all heirs cannot be located and abandoned vehicle or who has had possession of it since. Judge orders a title.

one of my high school football coaches played briefly for the Green Bay Packers and he had that same car in a "champagne" color, he said he bought that with his signing bonus and that's all he had to show for his "pro" football career, he used to let us borrow that thing and we'd go cruising around with a cooler of beer, "top down, bottoms up!" had to stop for gas about once an hour

I appreciate the advice. That still seems like a risk.

Also, the guy needs the cash for a custody battle so he's not going to hold it for me while we go through a legal process. He has someone coming from Alabama and in AL they don't even title vehicles that old.

quote:

As of now, Alabama does not issue titles for:

Vehicles 35 years old or older (e.g., 1989 model year and older as of 2024–2025)

For those vehicles, Alabama only issues a registration and a bill of sale — no title exists, even when the car is legally owned.

If he were in a position where he could wait, I would try, but too many headaches.
