A recent thread on this board about a guy who knocked up his girlfriend after seven months of dating got me thinking. Following the birth of a child, do you think a paternity test should be required by law to confirm the father? Doesn’t matter if the child was (supposedly) conceived during a one night stand, a brief relationship, or a ten year marriage.

Supporting a child is a pretty damn big financial and emotional investment for a man and (without a test) only the woman truly knows if the child might have been fathered by someone else.

Seems like it would be pretty easy to do right in the hospital after delivery. Why not?

Considering there are actual cases of men being forced to provide continual child support after finding out they aren’t the father, I say yes, it should be mandatory.

If you think you need one, get one.

Not at birth. If there’s child support involved, could look at that.

It’s pretty easy to request one. No need to force it.

I'd rather see mandatory abortions when the father isn't known.

True. However, I don’t think a lot of men want to celebrate the birth of (what they think is) their child by requesting a paternity test. Most are going to be caught up emotionally and a lot probably think their SO would never cheat on them. But sometimes people do things you would never imagine.

As badly as men seem to get beat up in the courts by women when children are involved, it seems like at least ensuring the father is indeed the father is logical.

Maybe it should be mandatory in cases where child support is being ordered, but otherwise seems kind of pointless.

If you’re that worried about the paternity of your child there are probably some steps you could’ve taken before the birth of a child to find out if your wife is cheating.

There would be many divorces if that took place,

The assumed father should be tested immediately.

A buddy of mine that you probably know knocked up a one night stand. He was already paying child support to his ex wife.

We were discussing his fate at Live After Five one evening and I suggested that he get a paternity test because she was a little sleazy. He thought it sounded good and had one ordered. It was his. 2 child supports for the next 10 years

The thought of a man working through life to unknowingly support a wife who cheated on him and conceived another man’s child is pointless?

Have any fathers here had a paternity test without your SO’s knowledge just to make sure it’s your kid?

If this is a legitimate concern then it's easy enough to accomplish. I dont see why the government should mandate it. Frankly the fact that this is even a discussion shows how ridiculous government overreach has become.

Yes.

I have a friend that was married.1st year they had a daughter.

His wife let him go a year thinking he was taking care of his daughter, before telling him that it wasn't his daughter.

I still get nervous when a 20-something with my beady eyes and big forehead does a double-take at me.

NOOOOOO!! I get that fight or flight like this is frickin it. Here comes my long lost kid from back in college when I came in a few chicks so they wouldn't know I only lasted 15 seconds.

I'd keep going until it started getting soft and fake a nut like I pulled out and jizzed in my hand(chivalry and all).
