Shift workers who call in sick for their Xmas shift:

Leave when your shift is over. Simple as that.

Or they can double your regular pay forever.

It's already proven who shows up.

Why’d you answer your phone?

Bingo

1) Do not answer the phone.
2) Tell them you’re out of town.

If they still somehow manage to get a hold of you, tell them you’ve been drinking and aren’t able to cover.

Answering the phone often has nothing to do with it. If you’re already at work on Friday and they tell you your coworker called in for Sat/Sun then you’re on the hook. Calling in sick yourself would only screw your other coworkers not the original pos. It comes down to work ethic.

Man, I was the bad guy ~22 years ago. Started getting chills Christmas eve morning. That led to puking and 103 fever later in the day. I had to personally call the guy that had to replace me. He refused to speak to me for over a month.

We get 3 days extra pay for Christmas, if you miss the day before or after that period you do not get the pay unless you have a Dr's excuse.

I was off for Thanksgiving but volunteered Thanksgiving Day, I woke up that morning and couldn't even stand up. I had the flu and had to go get a Dr's excuse so I would get my holiday pay.

During my years of shift work I would always volunteer for Christmas shift so I could have New Years off.. Normally it was next man up. But in that job it was Fridays that were killer and this POS would call in sick when it was close to holidays. I soon realized things ran smother w/o him there.. He was the first to be laid off.. Moral of the story the bosses see through the BS..

We have all but solved this problem by converting sick leave and vacation to PTO. Shitty employees rarely have a day of PTO left at the end of the year. If you get sick and have no PTO left, you are fired the next day.

Become this persons friend. Listen to them talk about plans. Find out their on call schedule. Then wait…wait a year, two, or three and then ruin their happy little plans by calling in and forcing them to come in. If you’re ever on the same shift with this person find out about when they are planning vacation and if your able to choose before them take that spot from them. Get another guy or two to help block off that entire week or so with their vacation too. Then, when it’s time for your day of vacation, show up to work and say you didn’t need it.

This used to piss me off before I retired. But unless the company disciplines the ones that do it nothing will change. I’m not talking about someone who is legitimately sick. I actually had to call in one New Year’s Day. Although I had 102 fever with the flu and should have went to the hospital. There are ways to stop it but that is up to the company.

We had one that called in one Christmas because he had staph on his butthole. He felt terrible but dude was in pain. He offered to send pictures to anyone who questioned him. No one took him up on it!
