This.
In today's market stock prices come first, employees come last.
Right, and if you and everyone in this thread expect to retire at all, you should celebrate this concept.

My work is non oil related, but IS oil related in that I am near the 77494 area code. Fastest growing in the nation. But that was solely based on oil and gas booming in 2012-2013. That may change.

production demand isn't falling off. We still need to turn the oil into products. Expansion and investment is what takes a hit when oil dips.

Question for the experts:
My son is about to start a Petroleum Safety program at a local college.... Should he consider a different focus? In all candor, he's not going to be a doctor or an engineer... We figured safety would have opportunities beyond just oilfield if things don't turn around. Thoughts?

How long is the program?
Downturns are just part of being in oil and gas and nobody really knows what it's going to look like 2,3, 4 years from now

So I've seen Shell, ConocoPhillips, and a few others mention layoffs but not Exxon. What's the word over there?

Exxon has been trimming as well. Mostly older guys being bought out with packages.

I'm laying off two people tomorrow. Not my idea of a fun Friday.

It starts as a two year at Fletcher and everything would transfer to NSU if he decides to do the four. He wanted to be in Marine, but I suggested he start with Pet Tech or Safety and then go to maritime school after that he still wants to.

This tells you the true state of the economy. Media and Obama try to act like things are great when it's still in the shitter.

I would say most good engineers are safe, a lot of layoffs I've seen are companies who overhired when times were good and are just just trimming the fat. My workload has increased but it's nice not having dead weight around the office.

I wouldn't worry then, safety side is usually one of the more stable
