today’s oil price downturn could last for several years
time to buy oil.
Explain this to me like a child. How does one buy oil? It WILL magically come up before the holidays to gouge as we travel.
How do you buy and sell oil?

I've never before seen so many senior level positions laid off like this. People who would have been untouchable in the previous downturns I've been through.

It's not coming up this year. Not significantly.

Happy I'm not in the US. Nothing good going on in the industry there and the forecast looks the same or worse.
Yeah, I'd much rather be in hostile africa.

Oil is sold by purchasing a set amount at a given price to arrive at a set date. Thus, oil is traded in "futures". You are basically betting that the price one could get for that delivery will be higher closer to the delivery time than it is now.
The other way it is "sold" is buy buying stock in oil and gas companies. When prices are cheap, the prices of oil company stocks generally decline, making them cheaper. When the price of oil goes back up, those stock prices generally rise with them. The idea is that by investing money in an oil company stock when prices are low, assuming the company doesn't go under and that you don't need that money any time soon, your investment could grow considerably once prices come back up. The question lies in how long it will take for prices to go back up.

I get 3-10 messages per week from people laid off who would take a leaky ship to "hostile" Africa right now for a job.

Been laid off since April. Very few hiring and market is flooded. Not surprised you're seeing over qualified ppl.

I was hiring across the Gulf South and the responses have been a bit overwhelming. Hired 3 offshore guys already.

Then why is my gas still $3/gal?
It's not that high, but they ain't giving it away. Still like 2.49/gal where I see it. Not long ago that was considered pretty high. Now suddenly the industry can't survive on it. I kinda think it's an excuse to shed companies' dead weight.
