It would really take an idiot to do this retiring from Shell. Your friends sound like idiots though.

He told me, "Man I'm going to make 6 figures and I didn't waste my time in college like you." I know that most operators make 6 figures but damn it aggravates me when ignorant people try to throw the, I didn't go to college and I still make 6 figures crap. Congrats. He also said, "when we are 40 I'll be making more a year than you." Stuff aggravates me. I just say okay, but it aggravates me.

Sounds like a person you shouldn't be friends with.

We have been friends since we were 5. We are like brothers. He is very competitive with how much we make. We took very different paths later in life and I'm not one to turn my back on my people. I can see this getting heated in the near future though.

It seems to me like he doesn't care much about you at all. He cares about being better than you.

There are tradeoffs for everything. Are there any high paying, no education required jobs that don't generally suck? Serious question. They all seem like they work constantly with very little time off. Some people like me prefer the better lifestyle to cash income ratio that my college degree affords me.

Good luck explaining something like that to an insecure person who only has one good thing going for him in life though.

Based on the character described in the OP, it doesn't sound like he is someone that will last 40 years with one company and retire with a huge pension. Or take advantage of 401k matching. People who feel the need to brag about their income also have the need to show it off, which limits how much they save.

They'll be out of a job by the time they are 30. Some type of injury will make them less productive and they will get replaced by someone in their early twenties. Then you can laugh your arse off at them

The only people that keep bragging about how, much money they make either don't actually make that much money or aren't used to making alot of money. I make 2-3 times more than most of the people i work with but I always try to downplay it to them if they bring it up. I don't bring it up myself.

It also sounds like you need to be a little more discreet about your income if you don't want that kind of competition.

And on a rotating schedule of nights and days. Fck all of that.

The people I know who work those schedules seem to be at about a 50% divorce rate.

No kidding, I'm glad these jobs are here and I'm sure in this economy, most are glad to have them.

I had friends bragging about making 30-40k just out of high school while I was in college. Guess how much they are still making?

You would have to pay me a lot more than 100k to live that lifestyle. No thanks.

Eta: op, what's your field or occupation ?
