For years my dad told me how unrealistic those sort of scenes are, and so naturally I assumed I should avoid such things when such a situation arose.
Surprisingly, my partners and I have never seemed to have much of a problem with the whole morning breath dilemma. My current SO usually initiates a kiss whenever we wake up.
Then again, I'm obsessed with dental hygiene so maybe all that prep work from the night before pays off.

My wife & I enjoy morning sex. We both look at each other and say "man, you're breath is harsh" then say oh well and go at it. 2 wrongs make a right in that situation.
