So long story short. I got my buddy a job with one of our suppliers for my company. Now his company is doing layoffs. He has been there about two weeks and was told he will know by January if he is part of the layoffs. His company offers severance deals but he is not sure he will get one being that he is a new hire. I told him to ask him boss, but he thought it would look bad. Just figured someone on here would know or work in hr. Honestly I feel kind of bad being that I told him this was a good company to work for.

Probably not. Last time my company had layoffs it was one months pay for every year of service.

honestly, just because they are laying off does not mean that they are not a good company to work for...just that business got slow. your friend should use this chance to make the best impression that he can right now, because they will have to make the decision on who to call back to work in the future.

what would be the point of asking if he will receive a severance package at this point anyway?....

I told him to start looking for a new job now. He is scared to look bad by having to take off to potentially go on interviews. He said what if I'm not going to be part of the layoffs and I screw it up by taking a different job. I told him screw looking bad. Do what's best for you and your kids.

I would be shocked if he got a severance.

Because if he got a severance package I would feel less guilty. It's just me being selfish really.

If they hired him a few weeks ago, they most likely new before hand that they were going to have layoffs. My first company had layoffs 3 months after I was hired out of school. Everyone in my hiring group (September) and the one from June stayed.

Tell him to work hard and he should be fine. They will consider him cheap labor and will probably go after the higher paid employees first.

This situation sounds poor and trashy

It would have to be a very poorly run company to hire someone in November only to lay them off in January

And they probably have a probation period for new hires so he wouldn't technically be a layoff

understandable...

to answer you question, as the others say, severance is usually based on time of service...so he would not likely receive much with his short tenure.

as shitty as it sounds, I have to give his company a little credit for not laying a bunch of folks off just before the holidays...

I think my company has a severance pay for people who get laid off within a year of hire. It's not much, maybe 2-4 weeks. The HR department should be able to tell you.

They might keep him because he is a cheaper employee.

Cross that bridge when it comes. He doesn't even know if he's being laid off yet.

The better impression he makes the more he can ask for if they call asking him to come back.

Why feel guilty? Did he have a job before? If not then he's making more money now than he would have without a job.
