It was almost exclusively people living in those neighborhoods. When they got to the sheltar, they took charge until the Red Cross took over. They made a huge mess of things, so the people set up their own food distribution centers. As soon as the water receded, dozens of locations became gathering points for locals to cook meals. Then, at lunch and dinner, people would just pick up boxes of food and drive around to the homes of friends and family while they worked and delivered meals. No beaurocracy, no government, just pure straight giving. I am yet to meet someone who lost their home who ever went without shelter or food for even a meal. Those AP'ers are incredible people.

I'm here a conservative, but there is a substantial presence of liberals in this state as well. They love the state, too. Hell, Austin is a major liberal stronghold. As are large swaths of Houston. Bexar County (San Antonio) went blue just this past election. To my great shame.

It amazes me that so many people have to shite in Texas to feel better about themselves.
I lived in BR during my time at LSU and wouldn't trade that experience for anything. The culture is amazing, as is the food, etc.
With that said, Texas has its positives as well. I don't see the need for envy. The LA job market isn't as good...that's just a fact.
The idiots saying Texas has no history just lack the intelligence to function at an average level.

First the record, I have no ill will towards NOLA. Both SA and NO are teeming with culture, just with different twists.

Texas has it all. You want to live around honkies, go to the suburbs. You want culcha, go to South Dallas or southwest Houston. You want to live in Mexico, you're in luck as Texas is basically North Mexico. Fort Bend County and Dallas's northwest suburbs are basically the UN. You can get diversity or no diversity coupled with good jobs, good public schools, no income tax, diverse landscape, and a relatively low cost of living.

I didn't take Texas state history, but I of course knew about the Alamo, the Rough Riders, and y'all briefly being a nation (lord knows that particular piece is often trumpeted). I mainly meant it in a relativistic way in comparison to your Mid-Atlantic states, NOLA, etc.
I was just trying to give a balanced, outside-looking-in perspective of how I saw it. I've driven through and visited much of the state and have several good friends from there, but it's this intolerance of anyone saying anything that might be construed as demeaning that has built the caricature so much of the country thinks poorly of when Texas is mentioned.
Not that you shouldn't be proud. Lord knows we all are of our homes. Just tone it down a bit.
