Everything wrong with LA politics is a result of Huey. Also, that our state government is so over bloated much of it with ne'er do well relatives of elected officials.
This right here

If I lived during those times, I very well have been one of the poor folk who would have loved Huey. With hindsight and the passage of time, however, I think his brief career hurt the state more than helped it in the long term. Still, however, you can’t deny that the man and his reign and his times are a fascinating topic to study.

Huey was the most fair Governor Louisiana had up until that time in that the middle and lower class actually got benefits such as roads, free textbooks and wide spread education. LSU got the beginnings of the current Tiger Stadium. Was he corrupt-hell yes he was BUT he saw to it that the non rich got more than their share.

Long brought this state into the twentieth century. Yes, he enriched himself and his cronies and some of his methods were autocratic. But they were no different than what the New Orleans Old Regulars and their upstate planter allies had been doing for decades while they controlled the state. Long at least made it so the common man got a few crumbs: schools for his children, hospitals when he was sick, roads and bridges to take his crops to market.
Folks may not like what you wrote, but it’s correct. FWIW, the best Huey biography in my opinion is the Kingfish and His Realm by William Hair.

And the fact that so many people look up to that slime ball and Edwin Edwards explains why the state will always be last in every important issue. And why I am glad I left and won’t go back.
A neighbor who is quite liberal politically, and a prof at LSU complained about all the layers of bureaucracy with layers of desk jobs not needed at Princeton or Iowa State. He was astounded at the waste of money at LSU with staff who literally do nothing productive
My daughter took a job at KSU in administration and as astounded how they do more with a helluva lot less. Even better is they have a Monday meeting with tasks discussed and assigned and no one phucks with you the rest of the week. This is so unlike her work doing the same things at McNeese

the payoff for supporting the dem.s at the time was a dump truck load of clam shells for your personnel driveway. Made a good road bed but difficult to walk on bare foot
Most of the clam shells came from W T Burton Industries, a partner in Huey's Win or Lose Oil Company. This is also why all the ancient clam shell reefs just off the coast are gone and another reason for coastal erosion.

State Lease 340 for 500,000 acres was sold to Burton $75,000 and a 12.5% royalty. Burton turned around and sublet it to Texaco fpr $95,000 and I heard 25% royalty. More and more of the interest in the lease was transferred to the Win or Lose Oil Company. It is believed that the lease has made over 800 million for the Win or Lose Oil company and it's successor owners.
State lease 340

Burton wanted the mineral rights for the clam shells and why subleased go Texaco. He supplied clam shells for many a state highway project. His original business was road construction with Huey, He ended up serving time in a Federal Pen for income tax evasion.

Yes we could have destroyed the United States a generation sooner.

So, “got more than their share.” Is fair? He did some good things but the bs way La is run today is largely a result of his leadership.

He's the reason LA Republicans think idiots like David Vitter and straight up racists like David Duke are viable gubernatorial candidates?

Every man a king isn’t too far from today’s definition of socialism. That’s why he was killed.
That’s quite a statement and quite a stretch. There was a lot more to it than merely that.

I don't think you realize how much Standard oil was raping the state.
The old regulars were no better than Huey.
