Tis graduation season is here, and our local school district gives each student so many tickets to attend graduation. Depending upon the school and venue, it is around 6-8 tickets per graduate. If all tickets were used, this is essentially the capacity of the facility. There is no charge for these tickets, nor is there reserved seating.

Of course, what happens is that this number of tickets is "not enough" for some families. As such, a market of sorts seems to have popped up on Facebook, with some parents asking if anyone has extra tickets, and other parents posting tickets for sale.

I've seen tickets being offered for as much as $35 a ticket. Remember, there was no cost in getting these tickets from the school. The school sent home an equal amount of tickets for each student.

Note that this is happening not just at the high school level. I've seen it for 8th grade, 5th grade, and kindergarten "graduations" as well (we can discuss how silly these events are in another post).

What say the O-T about this? I personally don't like it at all, but "muh capitalism" I guess.

Selling a graduation ticket you got for free, sounds trashy.

Only graduations that should happen in the first place are highschool and college first off. 6 to 8 tickets seem reasonable for a single kid, and if people want more and are willing to pay for it, I see no problem in that.

I'm guessing this family didn't have their graduate enrolled in AP Economics.

Also, needing more than 8 tickets sounds a little crazy.

On the other hand, if somebody can even get pocket lint for a "5th grade graduation" ticket, whatever the hell that is, I say go for it.

Other than you're just a complete dick for trying to profit off of a free ticket and someone going to see a loved one graduate.

Trashy gets thrown around on this board, but this is the definition, and a bunch of these are probably upper middle class private schools.

2 other kids, parents, and both sets of grandparents and they're gone. More than 8 people isn't ridiculous at all.

maybe the schools are too big? just a thought

this is why they moved Chalmette's graduation outside of St. Bernard Parish to UNO

what they should do in some cases is have graduations in the SKC and Superdome and not require tickets... that way everyone who wants to attend can be seated comfortably. that would require SMG-managed venues to give back to their community however.

If I'm going to pay for a graduation ticket, it better come with a free air horn and a black lady that yells how proud she is of my kid every 60 seconds during the ceremony.

This falls into the I don't give a shite category.

People can do whatever they want with their tickets.

If somebody offered to sell me extra graduation tickets for 30 bucks plus a pop, I don't think I would be able to stop laughing long enough to verbally decline the offer.
