How does this work as far as your health insurance network? Are you always out of network?

and is it shite or pretty decent?

Check your ACA(Obamacare) marketplace and get a quote. Bottom line, if you are poor and qualify for a subsidy it is decent. If you make too much money and don't qualify for a subsidy it is expensive as hell.

Before ACA, individual plans for self employed were cheap.

I refused to pay the ACA premiums and made other arrangements like many here have had to do.

Blue Cross/Blue Shield
Expensive with a high deductible, but other than that it is fine. Dental insurance is useless.

If you are in or near a decent metro. There are actually some good plans through the ACA marketplace. Just be sure to research each plan.

It actually saved me money several years ago when I had it. My employer had a 3k pharmacy cost and like 10k medical. I was blowing through that deductible in medication in 2 months and it was still 200 bucks on top of that after deductible.

Obamacare was cheaper 59 bucks and I had lower pharmacy deductible. And after the deductible my medication was 5 bucks. It isn't shitty for everyone. The better state and zip code you live in you'll have a shitload more options and some of them are good. If you live in bumfack Lousiana or Mississippi then you are prolly fricked.

I was not aware that you could opt out of your employer sponsored plan and go into the ACA marketplace. Maybe I'm mistaken, or maybe I misread your post.

I remember my wife's sister was a bartender at an employer with too few employees to be mandated to provide insurance, and she got a super sweet deal on the ACA marketplace for something ridiculous like $30 a month for cadillac coverage. Meanwhile my wife and I were paying 20x that for insurance with shittier coverage.

I'm convinced the ACA was designed to break the system, not fix it. Break it in a way that there's only one solution, which you can guess what that is.

@tigerforever. Since it is a “cost sharing” program and not technically insurance, there is not really a network. You can go wherever you want.

We thought about MediShare but we're 52 and 53 ... I'm just scared about truly serious things starting to happen.

Watched this thread closely. One thing I think our country gets wrong. It essentially forces a lot of people (if not most) to work for the corporations (which the government can control through regulations/taxes) even if they aren't happy and would be happier and more productive owning their own business.

The insurance aspect is why this country doesn't have the entrepreneurial spirit it used to have.

I absolutely would have the opportunity to be self employed if it wasn't for health insurance. I could easily do contract work and would have several clients that would use me regularly. I would make more doing that than in my corporate job but not enough to account for the higher taxes and having to pay for insurance through the ACA marketplace.

I have a Cadillac plan through my main employer with no deductible, $20 copay for office visits, $40 for specialists visits and only a $3,000 out of pocket max for $136/month. I could get a low deductible plan through UnitedHealth on the ACA for $200/month and it has a decent out of pocket max and a pretty low deductible but it doesn't cover anything diagnostic. Having several minor (but still there) medical conditions I genuinely feel trapped in soulless corporate America which is what they want.

His highness Obama and Madame Nancy gave us the amazing and aptly named Affordable Care Act.

Sorry but this sounds like an excuse. You must not be that miserable in your soulless corporate job. I think you have the tail wagging the dog here. If you are good and have confidence in yourself you can make way more money in you own business than you can in a corporate job that far outweighs the health insurance differential. Taxes? Come on man.

You need to realize Obamacare/big government destroyed your opportunity, not the insurance companies.

Before the ACA mandates kicked in my premium for a HDHP in the individual market(self employed) was only $150/month. In two years under the ACA that tripled to $450 and kept going up from there.

If you are healthy with no pre-existing, it's not that bad. United Health pro choice and about 1100 month. Cheaper than previous company insurance. Self employed.

Glad to share a reference.

I do believe big corporations are in bed with big government as a means to control us. Health insurance is a good way to accomplish the control.

I just depends on what it’s worth to you to be free. The benefits of self employment far outweigh the downside associated with higher health care costs. You have to be willing to take risk and self insure with a Health Savings High Deductible plan. Used properly through say BCBS you will be surprised how it can benefit your personal finances.

If you aren’t self employed because of health insurance cost differentials then you probably have no business being in business for yourself. I know this sounds harsh but that’s the reality.

Before Medicare, I had Blue Saver plan with Blue Cross, contributions to HSA were deductible, high deductible and expensive.
