My whole life, I’ve always been told that I didn’t have a worry bone in my body.
Well, I guess I’ve been doing my own version of a silent “Serenity Now” to myself.
I now suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I’ve had two attacks that sent me to the ER, because I thought I was having a heart attack or stroke.
My last big panic attack was triggered by a fricking Disney movie. It was actually “The Rescue” on Disney+, but it spawned a major anxiety attack, which spawned a panic attack.

There's an herbal medication for this, but Louisiana doesn't want it.

Panic attacks are a son of a bitch. The first time I had one it felt like all of my blood rushed to my arms and like you I thought it was a heart attack. That was about 10 years ago.

But was there something in the movie that got you worked up or were you just watching it?

The first panic attack you have is terrible. Fortunately, to this point, I've only ever had them in crowded places. The first one I had was at a loud and crowded Texas Roadhouse we stopped at when driving a long distance. It came out of nowhere in the middle of my meal. All I knew was that I had to get out of there. So, I basically dove over the person on the outside of the booth and bulled my way to the exit. I waited outside for the others to finish eating and managed to calm down.

The second one came a few months later when I was attending my younger cousin's 4H awards ceremony. It was in the local community college gym and as the people kept filling in, we kept getting pushed further and further up the bleachers. Right about the time I got closed off, it hit and down the bleachers I went, heading for fresh air. I got out to the steps outside and sat down. It took me a good 10-15 minutes to catch my breath and calm down.

I've come close a few times since, but I've been able to head it off. I try to keep moving in crowds and position myself either in the front or back of a crowd, never in the middle. As soon as I start to feel it, I bolt.

Mine have always been triggered by crowds. Thankfully, that's all that triggers them at this point. I can manage that.

I want to post something sarcastic, but I know about pent up emotions after leaving a career in LE.

Best thing is to find a healthy way to release whatever you locked up.

I found writing out my thoughts worked wonders. You have to acknowledge the thought, write it, then see it. You can either choose to let someone read it, or just rip it up after.

My first major panic attack was at a soccer game while I was sitting on the bench. We were up 6-0 or something and there was no real reason to feel anxious. I thought I was having a severe physical ailment and they even called an ambulance. I didn’t realize it was just a panic attack until years later. The worst one I ever had was when I was working as a bagger at a grocery store after I dropped out of law school. Couldn’t even go back to the job.

Yeah, I actually keep some of those small notebooks around to write in. I try to write in them every night before going to bed, because it helps me fall asleep, but sometimes I am too tired to which is a good thing because it means I will not have trouble sleeping.

ETA..

I was a paratrooper and am pretty much unflappable. I had one mood all the time and never got excited under any circumstances no matter how intense.

Mentally I’m still that way to an extent. I developed AFIB several years ago and something weird happened. It’s like my body suddenly said “OH MY GOD, YOU’RE GOING TO DIE” and freaked out. Mentally I felt the same but my body felt like it was going to pieces. Mentally I accepted my mortality a long time ago but my body isn’t buying it.

My AFIB got fixed in 2017 but sometimes the feeling starts to pop up. I have it under control now.
