So isn’t it a good thing that they’re seemingly seeking help early on?

I’m not saying all. But I went through some (very) disruptive and tumultuous stuff during college (that changed my personality still to this day), but I plowed myself into my studies as a distraction with a plan to excel and get the hell out of dodge.

Of course there are people who have escaped or dealt with some bad shite. Im talking about the chick driving a $60k SUV and parents credit card that “can’t deal” despite her only responsibility or worry being taking 12 hours of college credit and not failing. There is a lot of that.

I do think our biggest cause of depression is people just aren’t optimistic about the future anymore. I 100% fall into that camp.

Every therapist is different, and every patient needs different things. Some people are just emotionally locked up, like they’ve got all of these garbage bags that need to be picked up, but no garbage truck has come in a while. It’s all piling up to the point they can barely function anymore. Often times, just talking those problems out with someone who is supposed to be impartial can help clear that garbage.

For some people, talking isn’t enough. Their garbage is the fruits of bad habits and unhealthy coping mechanisms. They need real advice. It’s like when your girl comes home from work in a bad mood. Usually, she just needs to vent, but sometimes, she has a real problem that needs to be fixed and needs outside help to do it.

There is a lot of that on social media because women crave attention and validate themselves via sympathy. However, we’re making a lot of assumptions about those women. You don’t know if they were abused, had sexual trauma, or had any number of other issues that you can’t imagine. Personally, I think you shouldn’t concern yourself with social media “depression” girls. It’s practically a SIMPathy industry. The real depressed people aren’t blasting that shite all over social media constantly. Their mental health struggles are shameful. They only reach out when they’re absolutely at their last rope.

85% of social media is women flexing on each other or farming for sympathy to get attention. Maybe 5% is men trying to get attention from those women, and the rest is businesses marketing to those people.

Talking to other parents, there's a whole lot of this going on. Be it mental health or sexuality, these kids are young and quickly learn they earn sympathy/empathy/free pass if they somehow identify themselves as "broken" or different.

I remember my daughter telling her mother and I, at like age 11, that she was bipolar. As a parent, you always want to treat beliefs like this thoughtfully rather than dismissively. It's tough when you know that it's just some bullshite she read about online and has convinced herself that she has a severe mental illness. Same with a lot of these kids that claim to be gay, bi, trans, or whatever other flavor of sexuality you can think of. As a parent, do you operate under the assumption this is just some stupid social media shite and tell them they aren't, or do you take it seriously on the off chance they're really feeling this way?

It's a tough time to be a parent. I'm sure therapists are having a heyday trying to navigate the current environment. Social media is the debil.

I struggle with anxiety and occasional depression, especially in winter, and it is worse now with some sleep deprivation and work stress.

I allow myself to be upset for a bit, then I finally say to myself, “frick all that, time to get up and bitch slap life”.

In my case, it wasn't simply having the occasional blues/worry or just not really feeling up to doing anything. My body & mind had gotten into a state of almost always being in a panic attack due to anxiety. I would have cold sweats, pounding heart, overwhelming feelings of dread, and almost feeling like I could die at any moment. I couldn't sleep as a result, and lack of sleep only adds to anxiety. It starts to feed on itself and not something I'd wish on my worst enemy.

I guarantee that most of the "what's wrong with you? just suck it up" crowd have never experienced true clinical anxiety with physical symptoms. It's very hard to fully comprehend until you experience it first hand.

Maybe next you can start threads making fun of people with cancer and autism. No reason they can't just suck it up too right?

Like I said in the other thread, lower IQ people usually don't understand. Not that it wasn't known already, but confirmation is always entertaining.

Starts a thread crying about people being soft.

Cries about people not agreeing with his shitty premise.

It's absolutely a real thing, but I can understand how people can't grasp the concept if they've never experienced it or been close to someone experiencing it. shite, I didn't really think it was real until I got the call that my childhood best friend hung himself from a fricking door knob. No one had a clue. Yes there are some pussies looking for an excuse, but to lump everyone into that category is plain ignorance
