Baton Rouge properties up for auction Wednesday after owners fail to pay taxes

LINK

East Baton Rouge holds auctions the first Wednesday of each month to sell property seized when the owners did not pay their taxes.

Properties are up for auction on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

By law, the government can hold an auction once someone puts down a deposit, typically $850. The city then advertises the sale, puts it on the block and sells it to the highest bidder.

Who wants some interesting properties for cheap?

It might be adjudicated property. They have the right to reclaim it. You pay the unpaid prop taxes Plus fees and any extra that you driven out by bidding. It really can be tied up in legal limbo for years. You can never really ever do anything with it except sell it back to the owner.

Are there any requirements to improve the property within x amount of months if you buy one of these at auction?

I feel like TAF should set up a shell company and start picking off the houses near campus and just tearing them down.

Properties only go up for auction once a deposit has been made and the legal due diligence is done. Owners are given notice that their properties are going up for sale and have the opportunity to pay the taxes. I have bought several properties through this site.

I remember when Tommy Spinosa's personal house was up for auction as he didn't pay his taxes.

At most major universities this is common practice by the school itself, Purdue for example owns 100+ houses adjacent to the campus, until the land is needed for expansion projects the houses are rented to students.

Property tax ensures that you never really own shite. You are perpetually renting from the government.
