Buddy of mine did get his lip damn near bitten off by a nurse shark though. He was working for Captain Slates out of Key Largo and doing critter feeds.
Just you tube search shark bites diver (it is the animal planet untamed uncut one)....
That is one of my high school friends

Your buddy had his lips way to close to a wild animal.
And critter feeds are terrible fwiw. Marine animals are not meant to eat string cheese, cheerios, raw eggs, or anything else not found underwater.

I'm SSI open water certified.
And I'll likely never use it again
I did it mainly to try and overcome claustrophobia and to please my husband(he wanted us to dive on our honeymoon). MASSIVE FAIL!!! Horrible bilateral ear infections for both of us during our check off dives(in 50 degree waters of some lake in AZ in January). Barely got certified. Made it 12 feet underwater with a dive master on my honeymoon before I started feeling really panicky and realized "you know, I just want to be at the surface right now and never do this again" and signaled to her to go back up. Husband didn't even get to dive cause he forgot to take sea sickness meds and was back on the boat sick as can be while I was trying to dive.
Our dive instructor is a friend of ours and while he knows I will never dive again...he tells me I could always use my card to rent a tank somewhere and use it to basically do more intensive snorkeling(basically be like 5-10 feet under and be able to pop up whenever). That I would be open to. And if my husband ever wanted to dive I'd be open to him going...I'll just sit on the boat and help him suit up and snorkel while he dives though. Or sit back at the resort with a drink in hand.

I never plan a trip without multiple bottles of Dramamine. And as for the snorkeling with a tank/diving on the surface, I would highly recommend it. I've been with one or two divers that weren't comfortable at depth but 5-10' under allowed them to get away from the waves and still be close enough to go up if they felt uncomfortable.
Ear infections happen and cold water checkout dives are frequent if certified in the states. A lot of companies go to the springs in Fl.

Would a diving place be willing to do this? Even if it's been years since I actually was checked off? I don't have any trips planned but just curious.
Or should I maybe spend $50 at a dive shop to do some refresher stuff in a pool so they can put it in my dive book to show whatever dive shop in whatever tropical place I went to?
I could never get over what would happen if my regulator popped out of my mouth. I freaked out during regulator sweep exercises at the bottom of the lake. Would feel panicky most of the time I was underwater in the lake. That's how I barely checked off. I had hoped that maybe once I was in warmer water with better visibility I would calm down...but that didn't happen on my honeymoon. Felt the panic minutes after being underwater. Even in the pool it would take a few minutes of breathing in and out with the regulator to feel somewhat calm.

Been diving for 28 years and all over the world. I prefer snorkeling now.

See I love snorkeling. I got to see all the fish and everything...and pop up to the surface whenever I wanted. Although...being able to go down 5-10 feet to see better would be ok and wouldn't freak me out. Luckily I was able to easily clear my ears so that depth wouldn't hurt me.
My husband....another challenge he had was getting to depth. I think he has narrow tubes and that makes it a challenge for him to clear his ears. He was constantly in pain whenever he would go down. It stopped once he got to like 30 feet...but would start whenever he surfaced...no matter how slow he went. Supposedly there are some special masks for people with ear troubles. Our dive friend keeps offering to take him out to the lake to test it out but he just hasn't done it.

You would definitely have to talk to a Divemaster before hand. They would probably do a private dive on the surface but I doubt they would leave yall and take a group down to 60-80'. It could be fairly dangerous on the surface alone if there are no markers or dive flags.
Practice in a pool would definitely help. It takes a little convincing to tell your body that it's ok to breath underwater. Some people just pick it up sooner than others.
As far as nerves over losing or swapping regulators, that's normal too. At deep dives I get a little anxious at times. It goes away with repetitive trips and knowing your gear. A lot of set ups have an Octopus (back up regulator) or a secondary integrated into the BCD. Knowing that these backups are there and functional, and that a DM or buddy is nearby can also alleviate the anxiety.
At the end of the day, it's not worth doing if you don't enjoy it. I made that mistake in my past relationship. Really pushed her to dive, and she tried, but at the end, we both knew it wasnt for her. (no pics)

Originally certified ~10 years ago through PADI, got Advanced Open Water certification.
Took a 4 year hiatus, but recently dove in Roatan with immediate family. Have dove in Florida Keys, Bonaire, Cozumel, BVI.

For me it's about the freedom of not being on life support (cumbersome) and the colors on the surface compared to going deep. I still dive, but snorkeling is my favorite.

Depth is over rated. Best diving IMO is anywhere from 25-60 feet.

got NAUI certified in 1980 and used to dive the rigs. Back then we dove with a laminated navy dive table attached to our BC, a wristwatch, and depth gauge and pressure gauge. Aluminum 80 cf tanks with powder coated exterior was the newest thing. I assume scuba pro is still around?
Got my NAUI card in 1978, still have my original laminated dive tables. Class was 4 hours once a week for 12 weeks. Had to swim a couple of hundred yards and tread water for 30 minutes the first pool session. Scuba Pro gear was for people with more money, I had U.S. Diver, if it was good enough for Jacque Cousteau it was good enough for me. Still have the black rubber mask, fins and my dive knife that is about as long as my leg from knee to ankle, things have changed a lot since then.
