Scrap metal collectors/ sellers?

We have guys that drive around day before trash collection. Our town will literally pick up anything on trash day, so people put out appliances, couches, whatever. I put out a fridge and some small aluminum potters today and they were picked up in 20 minutes by a scrap guy. He had a 20 foot trailer piled end to end 8 foot high and his silverado bed was full. What could one expect to make on a big hall like that? Driving around on a Sunday picking up stuff for a few hours he knows has value. Really love the ambition.

At least they are out there hustlin’ to make some money, nothing wrong with that. And scrap metal is high right now so it’s probably not hard to make some dough.

Depending on weight, he'll make several hundred likely.
I hauled a load of drill pipe for a friend who had used them for a pipe fence. Big load.
The scrap yard has a geiger on the scale and it lit up. Wouldn't touch due to radioactivity. Just a nugget.

That is how I look at it, I think they are a team as several come by every hour. Gave them an A/C compressor a year ago that was gold to them.

not many doing it any more
its like collecting aluminum cans, you make $50 after spending $20 and putting in several hours to do it
you make more money working and wendys then you do doing it, but if you have nothing else to do its away to make a few dollars just like kids cutting grass in the neighborhood used to do
my neighbor said he makes about $200 for a big 40ft trailer loaded full with scrap steel stacked on it

Pays a utility bill for the month doing it twice a month...not bad
I'm guessing our town may be different for these guys given we have 4 different trucks come by on trash day..regular cans, bags and boxes, trees and bushes, anything huge...you can literally put anything on the street...they have probably identified us as a high likelihood of filling up their haul

Was he driving a brand new F250?
Then he can’t be making that much.

All of this is wrong. You can easily make a couple grand a week scrapping.

How big is his trailer home?

not really, when you figure in you work involved to collect it and then store it somewhere (huge piles of junk in your yard) and then the cost of a trailer and maint on that trailer, then the gas to go somewhere and back to sell it.
then you have tax forms recorded on it when you sell it so you have to report the income (they do this to deter copper thieves from doing it) its a lot of BS to go through just to make some beer money, but you can make money doing it if you dont mind working very hard to earn below the average minimum wage level income

I had some pipe in my yard that I was going to use for to move my shed. Plans fell though so I flagged Shorty our scrap man down and asked him if he wanted it. He nearly pissed himself he was so happy to take it off my hands.
While I was talking to him I mentioned that my wife wants an old fashioned aluminum body lawnmower that shoots grass out the front. He said I got 2, I'll bring you one. He ended up bringing them both over and letting me take my pick.
One day my up the street neighbors son was cutting their grass. He stopped on side the road and went inside for something. Ole shorty thought the mower on side the road was up for scrap and picked it up. His mom had to go run him down on the next street to bring it back.

Ever noticed how stuff can be gone within minutes? It’s like they have surveillance in the neighborhoods anytime someone puts out scrap.

with steel you get a check that day, they stopped cash.
Copper you have to come back after few days for your check or thats how it worked last time I scrapped well before covid. I have a couple of washers and a fridge I would like to scrap but the nearest yard is on the westbank since the new terminal was built.

Wut.
I dropped a washer off at Harvest house thrift store and they told me they get $18/ appliance. Seemed high to me? They are on my way to work and take appliances to scrap.
The problem is gas, but my guess is those guys make $200-300/ load give or take. It’s not enough to make it worth it unless you have a damn good trailer full.

It’s what they used to make those Egyptian beetles.
