TL;DR Scientists brush hydrogen peroxide on a 2x4, let it sit in the sun until it turns white, then applies an epoxy that turns it transparent.

quote:

Researchers at the University of Maryland have turned ordinary sheets of wood into transparent material that is nearly as clear as glass, but stronger and with better insulating properties. It could become an energy efficient building material in the future.

...As window material, it would be much more resistant to accidental breakage. The clear wood is lighter than glass, with better insulating properties, which is important because windows are a major source of heat loss in buildings. It also might take less energy to manufacture clear wood because there are no high temperatures involved.

Yo that is legit fricking nuts.

Doesn't seem like it'd be hard to create in large quantities either.

Imagine cheaper glass, you can cut yourself at home, doesn't shatter/break easily, and is a better insulator. Depending on the epoxy, I'm guessing it will yellow over time though.

I'm sure it's not nearly as transparent, but for windows you don't look through much it would be awesome.

Or in attic and garage. I know I've got like 10 windows on my house no one ever looks through.

But now that I'm thinking about it, is this better than plexiglass? That shite is cheap and strong too.

As someone in the glass business, I do not like this.
