I came across this few years ago and I think SFP posted a thread about it.
Why French kids don't have ADHD.

I love when these people point out their improved test scores as proof they have ADHD. While cocaine has proven to make me more active, it doesn't mean I had energy issues in the first place.

The ability and habit of focusing is very much learned. ADHD and ADD are increasing because kids do not learn to focus or create a habit of focusing. Kids now will have an ipad out, TV on, eating a snack while playing with many other toys. Kids nowadays cannot even ride in a car without a TV or ipad on. They are way overstimulated. There is a no way a kid who has never had to sit still and listen will be able to go to school and do it.

I thought it was insane that some guy on here entering med school was talking about how he felt compelled to get on adderall/vyvanse just to keep up with other med students. It's a performance enhancer now.

Same here. Going to the grocery store with mine is a 2 hour event.
ETA: Even if it is made up bullshite. If medication helps those people, who cares??

used to believe that it was a bullshite made up thing. Then I married my wife. She's truly got ADHD. I've seen it in action too many times to think it's not real. She is an extremely disciplined person who was an honor student. She's the farthest from lazy as can be. But her brain struggles to stay focused. She can flash through 80 different thoughts in a blink. Sometimes she'll be in the middle of telling me something and wander off down a rabbit hole that ends up at a completely different place. Every now and then she'll go back and explain to me how she got from point A to B. It's CRAZY how many thought calculations go on in her head at light speed. Sure, I think ADHD is VERY over diagnosed. My wife is a PA and she says it's way over diagnosed.
30 years ago the statements you made about your wife would be taken as you describing her personality, today the same description is seen as symptoms of a disease that should be treated. My wife has the same personality type and like yours is educated and accomplished, but the common opinion today is they should have be treated with drugs.

Let’s go back 50 years. We have a 7-year-old child who is bored in school and disrupts classes. Back then, he was called lazy
Back then he was lazy, got moved away from other students, did poorly in school, dropped out/didn't graduate. Now there is medication and doctors who follows them to insure they start seeing better performance in school and have the opportunity at a leg up.
Could much of it be solved with a military-like home life? Possibly. But that's not possible. There are medicines that are safe and improve performance. Where is the downside?

Good morning kids here is your sugary apple juice and a big bowl of sugar filled cereal. Now have a good day at school and try to focus extra hard today.

If I had taken Vyvanse in law school I would have absolutely crushed. I experienced it later.
I always say, if that stuff was around the last 500 years and every body was on it, frick the moon, we'd be colonizing Mars right now

Compare the foods from 50 years ago to today. So many additives and other items we can't pronounce are embedded in even the basic foods.
You think arse whippin and stern discipline will fix a chemical imbalance?

The issue is there has been a serious drop in knots-yanked-in-asses since the 1950s.
Studies prove it.
Lack of knots in asses.

The scientist you quote in the OP died in 2009. I'm taking a stance either way, but your title is disingenuous at best.

I was diagnosed with ADHD in 6th grade, which was in the late 80s. The doctor didn't just say "you probably have ADHD, here is a prescription", I had to be tested and had never heard of ADHD until my parents had to meet with my doctor to get the results of my test.
I can assure you it is not bullshite, however; it is extremely overdiagnosed.

ADHD is real.
I used to be on the ADHD-is-bullshite bandwagon until I saw my own son struggle with it.
I tried everything to change him, without medication, for years. Finally, one day at baseball practice when he was about 10, I looked at the kid and his eyes were literally moving non-stop in his head with overstimulation.
I had his doctor write him a prescription for vyvanse. The next day, he was dead-on task with everything. I felt like a fool.
All the yelling... all the fighting... all the behavioral modification techniques... all the punishment... worthless. I thought if I was just harder on the kid, he would change.
I was totally wrong. In admitting that, and getting him actual treatment for ADHD, I saved my relationship with my kid, and he lives a much better life now.

As a 52 year old with a near photographic memory I can assure you the food 50 years ago was LESS safe and had MORE hazardous shite in it. Food dyes now banned, canning practices now banned, preservatives now banned, higher salt, higher sugar (sucrose from cane and beets though not HFCS). Before ever getting to the factories for processing, more (quantity) and and more dangerous to human pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, hormones, antibiotics, he list goes on.
You may be referring to pre-WW1 and generally just after the real advent and acceptance of industrialized food though. Before WW1 most of America was self reliant for food. Canning was done in the kitchen using glass jars and people raised and slaughtered their own animals. The nation had a majority rural population till about the time of WW1 and it wasn't until after the war when the troops returned home and needed income when they did what all returning troops do (make babies) that cities bloomed into the population centers.

Maybe...but SPECT images seem to show some neurological commonality in those who cliam ADD symptoms. Not sure about the Hyperactive component.

ADHD is a scam.
1. it increases the need for Psychologists and Psychiatrists
2. It increases demand for prescription drugs
3. It allows students to get extra time on exams and other testing aids, giving them an advantage in school
4. It allows them to qualify for disability benefits when they turn 18.
It is a scam to allow more people to get on the dole while making more money for big pharma.
Anyone, literally ANYONE, meets the criteria to be diagnosed with ADHD. Why? Because it is a made-up disease. We are literally drugging our children over a lie.

Its a disorder. Unfortunately the people who have it are drowned out by those who are improperly diagnosed through carelessness. It has become too easy for teachers to recommend, doctors to hastily determine, and drug companies to push.
