Schwarzenegger defends 102-year-old who is being evicted

so, I AM for landlord rights & I do believe that when you buy land you should be allowed to use it as you see fit
however, having the right to do something does not make actually doing it right
kind of hard to believe that anyone would do this; especially considering the blowback he had to know was coming

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the actor and former governor of California, on Sunday reportedly reached out to the 102-year-old Los Angeles woman being booted from her apartment where she lived for 30 years so the landlord’s daughter can move in.
Thelma Smith received a 90-day eviction notice for her month-to-month lease in early March and is now relying on friends and relatives who live on the East Coast to help her find a new place to live, The Los Angeles Times reported.

The Los Angeles Rent Stabilization Ordinance says that landlords in the county can evict tenants to accommodate a relative, but they must start with the most recent resident. Smith, however, lives in unincorporated Ladera Heights where the laws are weaker. “They use this law to target long-term, low-paying tenants,” Larry Gross, the executive director for the Coalition for Economic Survival told The Times.

Its not an eviction OP, and I'll say this politely. She was given a 90 day notice which is long as hell btw that her month to month lease is ending.

Simple solution -- Why doesn't Schwarzenegger make a fair/generous offer to buy the property and then he can let the woman live there for free for the rest of her life.
Let's see Schwarzenegger put his money where is mouth is. It's easy to be generous with someone else's money -- like the true Democrat that Schwarzenegger is.

I don’t think this is about money. Are we assuming his daughter is going to pay market value rent? That’s not very likely.
Whatever. It’s the landlord’s right. It’s still kind of shitty.

fine; but I am not the sky screamer that you seem to want to rail against here on the OT Lounge...

It doesn't matter. The woman can take the money Schwarzenegger pays her and buy another piece of property for her daughter to live in.

Arnold’s estimated net worth is $300M-450M. I think he can help this old lady if he really wants to.

That you reposted...
So at what age do we stop running a business and start taking care of someone else's 102 year old family member? For all we know, the landlord was attempting to help this lady move for years and she refused.

I'm sure it's hard to pay the mortgage when you have rent stabilized units.

This is a good argument for owning your own property. Don’t want to have a lease not renewed, buy.
What this landlord is doing with the property has absolutely 0 to do with this story.
The story is simply ‘landlord not renewing 30 year old lease on 102 year old and giving 90 day notice’.
Hell what are the chances the 102 year old dies in 90 days? 5%?

Something like that happened in France. Someone paid for an apartment in Paris for a 90 year old woman. She lived another 28 years and outlived the person paying her rent.
