It’s not only tornadoes. It’s complete overreaction. During the winter they shut down schools on the northshore due to ice. It was 36°.

Yeah, I already bitched. Schools were safe enough to send admin for half a day... it has nothing to do with the fact that the school employees legally have to work at least 1/2 a day to get paid. Absolutely nothing to do with that. They didn't make today a virtual day so they wouldn't have to make it up, never would have done that.

Snowflake society. That's why.

No one doubts it can destroy schools.
But should we never send kids to school because of that fact? Tornadoes don't spring up hours ahead of the squall line.

These “school cancellations” ABSOLUTELY never happened when I was in school - unless it snowed/iced.
Teaching our kids to be pussies
I remember having tornado drills — sitting in class when it looked pitch black outside due to the oncoming storm.
Oh, and we also drank out of water faucets, played on metal swing sets when it was lightening nearby and played “war” with bottle rockets

Did you ever play doctor with your neighbor, or your cousin?

Not true. Cells that pop in front of the line are typically the most dangerous in severe set ups.
That was not really a concern today though.

The schools can only follow the forecast. If school doesn’t cancel and there is seriously bad weather, the same people will be hollering, why didn’t you cancel?

You don’t think if a tornado hits a school that kept kids in class with this kind of approaching system that there wouldn’t be a feast for Gordon and company?
Has that ever happened?

The storm was scheduled to hit at 5pm. Shut down at 2:30pm or go to 3pm when school is complete.
Let people be grown ups, if you need more time to get home & hunker down pick your kiddos up early. We rarely make a full week anymore without some interruption, scheduled or unscheduled.

So I think the weather experts carry the most blame here. They need ratings and App Clicks. I clicked that app 6 times today, on a sunny day I will not even think of their app. Darn I think it may be my fault

So you are responsible for making the call: Weather advisory indicates high potential for dangerous conditions around 3:00-5:00. What do you do?
My child”s daycare (private) uses the Jefferson Parish Public School System’s decisions as guidance when calling for early dismissal/school closure. Then they usually add an hour ahead of that because they have many employees that “live an hour away and need to pick up their kids”. Huh?
I asked then why don’t hospitals close when inclement weather is upon us? They said, “hospitals are essential”, to which I responded “Yes they are, and you just told some of their employees they have to leave work early”.
On top of that the daycare doesn’t use school busses to transport the children and no one tells you to hire employees that live out of town.
To answer your question, use better sources that know how to predict weather instead of watching Margaret Orr. I deal with weather everyday in my line of work and we are the epitome of a safety heavy profession. If we canceled or postponed due to every threat of weather as much as the government does we’d be out of business.

remember when I was kid they didnt cancel school until the day before Katrina hit. Things sure have changed.
They cancelled school an entire day before it hit? Not the day of the weather, like today?
So, the change is that we were softer in 2005?
Between shite like this and a dude calling weathermen politicians, the first page of this weekly "I'm annoyed either way" thread was really on fire.
