The district, which serves about 2,300 students, faces a financial shortfall of about $20 million, according to CBS affiliate WMAZ. The problems surfaced after the district failed to pay $6 million into the state health insurance plan. State auditors later determined that its financial problems were more extensive than initially believed.

Oof.

We used to play Dublin in basketball. I remember they had a hotel we always liked staying at.

Dublin at least at one point was the host of the World Redneck games.

And I distinctly remember a feeling of lunacy as I pulled into a Dublin gas station at sunset on my way to Atlanta to see that every teenager in the county was hanging out for fun at the gas station near the interstate. Place was like a zoo.

So that’s to say I’m not surprised this happened

Good, so they are going to keep getting paid and not have to work. Makes sense.

The Dublin City Schools Board of Education is comprised of seven members, including a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Treasurer, and four additional board members. Representatives are elected from four districts (wards) as well as three at-large positions to ensure broad community representation.

Currently, Mandy Smith serves as Chairman, John Bell as Vice-Chairman, and Peggy Johnson as Treasurer. Additional board members include Jeff Davis, Joanna Glover, James Lanier, and Kenny Walters.

Looks like some, if not all, of those members need to make an appointment to go to prison

During the state hearing, attorneys representing the school board argued that administrators had misled members and concealed the district's financial condition.

State education officials argued that board members knew about the problems and failed to provide adequate financial oversight.

Just read that the state Dept of Ed removed the Board and new Board members will be appointed. That is quick work.

$20,000,000 is a hell of a grift if someone is on the take. More likely they ran a deficit years ago and kept trying to cover debt with more debt and the interest kept growing. Then there was no more road left to kick the can down any farther.

That’s not a large district. To have a $20M deficit, the entire board had to be asleep at the wheel.

It seems absurd and is, but that’s only $8,650/ kid.

Extremely poorly done, but as said they probably go behind 10 years ago $500-1000/ kid and it’s been snowballing since then.

ETA: I wouldn’t doubt they did something like built a new school or had a tax taken away and instead of making the right financial decisions tried to skate by without making any changes.

The state ought to make the board members do a door to door cheese and sausage or pizza kit sales like the volleyball team, band members, and other students have to do to raise funds. I would LOVE to see how long it took to raise the necessary $20MM like that!

Hmmm. I wonder which three this describes?

You make a decent point, but keep in mind they were slightly outnumbered by the other four so it can't be laid at their feet alone.
