Our school system charges a $15 instructional fee for elementary and middle school students, and a $25 fee for high school.

We are told it's mainly to cover consumables - paper, ink, toner, etc.

Our middle school also charged a $10 art class fee - for art supplies I guess - and a $5 locker fee (get to use the locker, I guess the money pays for the lockers over time, I dunno, the locker fee is the one that makes me question).

In middle school you also need a PE uniform, cost to buy from the school new is $40. But you can use it for years, hand it down, buy used from another kid, etc.

Our school system simply says that if a parent can't afford any fee, to discuss that with the child's principal.

There are also small fees for things like field trips, these fees pop up during the year. I've told teachers to let me know if there is a kid in the class that can't pay it - I don't need to know who it is - and I'll gladly pay it for that kid. There's always a few parents that are like me, so I usually get asked to pay a fee for one kid, one trip, per year, on average.

I'm blessed in many ways and there are a lot of kids out there in families that struggle.

if they don't pay the budget fees, the school usually

-won't order them a cap and gown
-don't receive school's spirit shirt
-no field trips (which are covered by the fees)
-school's computer usage could be restricted (if it was a technology fee)

Only fees my kids' schools have are for PE uniforms and some of the after school extracurricular activities.

They do hold a couple of fund raisers each year though.

My son’s fees are ~$10k/yr, 7-12th, and they still hit me up for a $25 fee for a religion book. WTF?

In California, it you don't pay, you then owe double so they can offer it free to an illegal alien kid

Green's fee? If I was back in school I'd go play golf all day.

Look at it like the airlines that nickel and dime you with add on fees because they want more revenue but want the "ticket" price to be lower.

The schools need/want more money and it is much easier to do that than it is to try and get additional tax dollars.

My kids go to private school and I still have to pay fees for everything. I would rather they just raise tuition a few hundred dollars but we accept the fees rather than a tuition (or tax) increase.

Why TF do we have graduation for every grade these days? Congrats little jaxson passed pre-k. We don't need any more than to advance them to the next grade.

They threaten to not let them walk at graduation but I guess legally can't do that.

They can't legally withhold their diploma but I think they can legally keep them from participating in the ceremony.
