Operations director at the park turned himself into custody after being charged with manslaughter and child endangerment. While it sounds like the ride should have never been built in the first place, how does the prosecution single out one individual to charge with crimes of this severity? Do engineers, project managers, safety coordinators, employee that let small kid sit in front of the raft with 2 whales behind him not share any liability?

Because he was in charge of operations and likely green-lighted the project, build, and QC of the ride.

I understand that someone has to be held responsible but damn, that seems excessive

Ahh. Congressmen son is why. This is such an apparent abuse of power.

It says he witnessed testing of the slide but had no role in the design of it

Doubtful.

The operations director was promoted to his position in 2013 - a year after the project to build the tallest water slide was announced. The engineering was done prior to him being in his position and the slide was already in the process of being built

Unfortunately, when something bad happens, society looks for a scapegoat. Even if something is a totally unavoidable accident, we want to see someone blamed and punished. unfortunately, it looks like this guy is going to take the fall...

I think this fact probably didn't help his case at all...

[quote]The Schwabs went to Schlitterbahn Vacation Village near The Legends in western Kansas City, Kan., on a day when the water park was admitting elected officials and their families for free. Read more here: LINK ]

How is it not illegal for elected officials to accept admission for free?

Why would that be illegal?

Because if this was a drug rep giving doctors a free perk - the media would shudder with angst at the corruption.

Would/does this guy even have a engineering background? Seems like whoever built it and said it was safe if operated a certain way should be held responsible.

So there’s no safety oversight by the state.. if we’re going to charge an operations guy shouldnt we hold the state safety inspector responsible as well. This should be a solely a civil matter unless they can show this single individual showed gross negligence..

If I’m remembering right they already settled in civil court.. the park paid several millions to the remaining kids in the family. I’d be interested to hear how the guy with a business degree who I assume was responsible for expense budgets, managing staff, maximizing efficiency is the one responsible for the boys death

Curious to know what this is for? Could be why they threw the book at this guy? Could be a scum bag that deserves it, who knows.

I find it hard to believe they'd single someone out and it not be one of the designers/ engineers if there wasn't a good reason.

Speaking in terms of Louisiana, ethics laws are very complicated on what civil servants can and cannot accept in terms of gifts.

However, legislators are pretty much completely exempt from the ethics laws.

IIRC, didnt they blame the accident on an issue with weight? Either the victim not weighing enough or ride operator allowing the tube to be loaded wrong with heavier people in back and not enough weight up front? How is the park director criminally responsible for the mistake of someone else who was operating the ride at the time?
