government removing zoning and reducing taxation (aka, getting the frick out of the way) is teh best avenue to private investment
Agreed. Zoning that favors single-use development has been a big problem. TIFs have been used to reduce taxation as well.

are we assuming that those displaced will move away from the BR metro area completely or something? or they'll stop driving cars?
We're assuming that people who live downtown put less demand on infrastructure than people who live on the outskirts. The utilities are already in place and density is good for efficient use of utilities. They don't need to run new utilities for great lengths to service a small number of people.
Also, many of jobs and major employment centers are typically located downtown or nearby. In Baton Rouge, state government, LSU, Exxon, city government, etc. are located there. So, if someone lives downtown, their daily trips are likely going to be a lot shorter than someone who lives in Central or Santa Maria. Shorter trips equal less wear-and-tear on roads and bridges and less traffic issues that need to be addressed. It's less pollution as well.

tourism and Baton Rouge should not be used together. BR already free rides enough off of LSU

And I seriously don't see where this is an negative to use tax dollars to put back into the city that pays those tax dollars to make an area better or encourage it rather than let it go to dogshit. Letting it go to shite would seem to be the enemy of the area and tax payers than their assistant.
Yea, the long-term effects of central areas turning dogshit are going to worse for the taxpayers.

i say this with all sincerity.
you're a fricking idiot who doesn't have an opinion for yourself but think agreeing with others who you think are smarter than yourself gives you the same appearance.
you can write 100 word and have no point because in that empty cavity between your ears there isn't one synapse firing on all cylinders.

Things are better in Baton Rouge than they have been in decades. Downtown is almost unrecognizable from 15 years ago and things are looking better than ever with IBM and now the massive Water District on the way. Mid CIty is humming-housing prices in some areas of Mid City are off the hook. Bluebonnet Highland is hopping. L'Auberge looks great. Campus North is being revitalized with all new student housing. Airline is so much better with the 6 lane. Brand new Women's Hospital. I-12 and I-10 have helped tremendously with the commutes. Especially I-12. They cleaned house at CATS. BREC is nationally recognized. The economy is rolling. That's all good for everyone in the 5 parish area, not the least the people of "St. George."
Yet, I hear it often from St. George supporters that the city is on decline. The progress the city has made in recent years has been great. Yes, there is still tons of work to do, but I don't see how anyone could things are headed the wrong direction. And even the school system has shown some improvement. People forget that the federal desegregation order just ended a few years. Once the new Lee High gets built, the people in St. George will essentially have neighborhood schools. They practically already have it at the elementary and middle school levels.
quote:
Sure there's plenty of problems, but as horrific crime rate is, 99% is contained in the hood and the average "St. Georgian" isn't effected by it one bit.
And since BRAVE has been instituted, the murder rate has seen a very significant drop. Last year, the murder rate in the city of BR was down 27% and is on pace for another big decrease this year.

Look you F..ing retard. Can you read? What part of Public School problem is unsolvable and under a Federal Court mandate anyway don't you understand? What part of they cleansed house at CATS escapes you?
Bottom line is you're just another clueless whiny St. George bitch that actually believes "no taxation without representation" type of shite you prattle about. You have the right to vote and have elected representatives from your area. Tough shite you aren't in the solid majority.
You're being heard but acting like bunch of beta bitches cause you don;t get everything you want. You're like a bunch of goddamn 5 year olds that cry and bellyache cause everything doesn't go their way. Worse yet, you are bitching like a women that won't let go about something that is unfixable so you want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. The glass is 85% full and all you think cause you ain't got the other 15% the best solution is to throw the whole fricking glass on the floor and break it so nobody gets to drink at all.

having Saints season tickets, there is absolutely no way this is true. I10 backs up by highland road every single day at 5. If you take highland road, you're looking at over 45 minutes just to get to interstate.
I jut get on i110 downtown and. Go straight through. Hour and a half at most. Why would I lie?

You are missing a large piece of this puzzle. Ryan Heck, a proponent of St.George is the one who released this information. Think about that......

yes and impossible in Nola. public schools are fine. the problem is our student population has a lot of trash in it. that's why we score so low. in Nola, the trash and well-to-do share geography. that's why the good schools are almost always private
quote:
I'll concede you do have a point though. Terrible schools will leave people running to areas with better schools.
that's why we had the suburban expansion, in a nutshell
also, that is a reason why we shouldn't say, "oh NYC is doing this, so we should, too." they have different demographics and aren't subject to a court order (or potentially new court order/federal regulation). we have to develop our own way within the rules laid out for us

You just have to love how these two sentences get placed in the same post. Every time they tell people to go "pound sand", more people say frick it and just leave.

What does it matter that it was Heck who revealed the discussions with the Mall of La and BR General Hospital?

These proponents act like they are inhabitants of District 12 in the Hunger Games dying on the vines in the hinterlands. They act like they are the only ones who care about education in the city. They complain the city is going to shite. No one is listening to their needs. Phooey. BR has one of the strongest economies:

Nice parks (for all), loads of recreational opportunities (for all), jobs (for all who are willing to show up), nice places to live (for all), great food and the list goes on. This tax grab attempt is almost criminal and I believe there are enough people against it in the proposed area alone to stop it.

St George threads are exactly like bitcoin threads. 10 pages of the same few people posting the same arguments from the thread the week before. And no one else really cares.

I like how penny money's entire argument is we can't fix schools so St. George parents and proponents are unreasonable and idiotic.
That's been the main political plank of just about every single urban politician running for office in East Baton Rouge for three decades. So you're saying their entire premise and vision and motivation for running for office-improving public school educational outcomes-is a lost cause, Sisyphian-esque task that is unsolvable.
That's the height of stupidity. It's like saying, oh well, I've got skin cancer on my forearm. Since there is no "cure" for cancer I won't bother treating it. Might as well just lop my arm off instead.
Posts like these remind me of how unoriginal some folks are out there...and how unafraid they are of showing that off to everyone.
