So sorry for you all. It's painful.
My 14 year old GS is struggling. I dread the day.

I just wanted you to know that I read this about 100 times this weekend.

She is gone now.............and it was terribly hard. I am a grown arse man and have been sad all weekend...............but this little story got me.

It was perfect. Thanks.

In my experience have had the mindset of they will let me know when it is time.My pups (15 year old and 13 year old) could barely walk , barely ate towards the end and the last notice that let me know was i had to lift them to use the bathroom. I even did that for a few days hoping that the next day they would just magically start walking and running. I scheduled the vet trip soon after when that didnt happen and held each one as the went to sleep. Just hold them and make sure the last thing they see is you and your family when they close their eyes.

I had to put my oldest down right before Thanksgiving. We had a party for her and Lap of Love come out afterwards. It was super difficult.

I've often remembered a story my grandmother told me about pets dying in her childhood. Her father had been young and fought in the Civil War and they were poor. Each child had a pet; some lived longer than others. When one died, there was a proper funeral. All her six sisters and one brother would 'dress' their pets appropriately and a solemn walk out to the pet cemetery. Words would be spoken, and the pet buried.

Somehow, I think we'd all be better off if we could treat the occasion the same nowadays.

Mine had gotten to that point too.
She was hurting bad in her back legs. She was a hog for breakfast but the last week............we had to entice her. (bad sign)

I had to pick her up all the time..........we never knew if she would pee or whatever. Even though I watched it and knew it was time......I didnt admit it.

Her last day.........she got nuggets / Ice Cream / Pretzels, made her toast. She pigged out and then.............we made the trip.

Its still hard after the weekend.

Seems like it's a rough three weeks for TD dogs, ooff.

I think we are putting ours down today. I only knew him for the last few years, but my wife's 12-YO Weimaraner has bone cancer, found out last week, and he took a rough turn over the weekend.

Just the sweetest guy. Wants nothing more than to be around people. Went from still seeming like a puppy 3 weeks ago hiking to every time he gets up being a chore.

Sending out thoughts and prayers to all those losing dogs...rough time of year for that.

Sorry to break it to you, but even when you think you're ready it's still gut-wrenching. So sad that your family is having to go through this, but all dog owners do at some point.

Remember the good times, share your grief, and you'll know when it's time to get a new pup. God bless.

Well thank goodness.............we still have two.

Gonna save on medical bills/food etc for a while.
Probably not gonna get a 3rd dog yet.

Our others are 15 and 10...........no puppies at our house.
