I got something. Many civilizations that go way back have outlandish origin stories or parts of their prehistory that are just not congruent with reality.

The Han account of their transition from illiterate, non-history tracking, primitives to literate, metal-forging, city dwellers is very realistic. It starts with some spirits and leaders trying and failing to contain the mighty rivers of the Chinese Mesopotamia; which would periodically kill them by the thousands. Their first dynasty was founded when a forward thinking engineer devised effective ways to build damns to cut down on the torrential flooding.

Until that point, the deposited sediment they used for their levees were ideal for agriculture but worthless for stopping water; the obvious and easy to obtain solution was not the correct one. They finally hit critical mass as a civilization when they started applying critical thinking to their problem. They had a solid foundation, and then history happened.

They struggled with their essential rivers. I think we can relate to that.

Some Chinese people are actually good people. The China government can die in a fire.

At least the bat snack diseases they keep sending us aren’t 100% lethal. Although, if they were, they would never make it here!
