I own my own businesses and need to be available 24/7. This has always limited my travel because I feel the need to always have a cell signal. Considering taking the family to the Caribbean for a week this summer. Does a satellite phone truly work anywhere? Anybody know the true cost? TIA

I've never had an issue. And I've been to rather remote locations in the Caribbean. You may have a call drop, but you'll be fine.

And if you need 100% reliability, but are willing to get on a plane for 4+ hours without phone service, I know for a fact you'll be within 4 hours of a phone connection to the US at any location in the Caribbean.

Do you need voice? You can look at buying something like the Spot X and get messaging/emails. That's if you want to buy something outright for a not too bad price.

LINK

I have the regular spot messenger for tracking me when I go in the mountains, works well, but it only sends one way.

What do you do that's so important that you can't miss a call and call them back in a couple of hours? It's not like you going to the middle of the rainforest or the peak of Everest, I'm pretty sure your Sandals Resort has cell service.

I would say your new tough guy persona sucks but so does all the other personas you have tried out over the years. Maybe it's just the source of them all?

They don't work well anywhere, in my experience most of the time they don't work as well as cell phones. They will not work well or, at all inside buildings, you need a clear shot at the sky through a window, or will have to go outside where there is clear sky above you. Their main use is where there is no cell service at all, and going outside to make a call is acceptable as opposed to having no communication.

I have someone like that...unfortunately my personality-type doesn’t allow me to shut it down mentally.

How big of a business? I used to be like you and had trouble growing because of it until I learned how to delegate better and let managers manage.

Several different businesses...70 or so employees, most of which are very good and reliable. I’ve just never been able to let go of the responsibility. Can’t enjoy myself at all if I don’t feel like I have a means of fixing problems, if that makes any sense.

This was the exact thing I was about to post. My air bnb host had one on the island we stayed on in Belize. It worked great outside, but he kept it close to a window to get calls in.

I am currently about the same but a lot of mine are sub contractors but still have to be managed constantly and I have a team that does just that to save me the constant headache.

It does and I have to step in constantly to solve issues as well but what you are describing is miserable. I have learned nothing is so bad that it can't wait a few hours for you to go enjoy an excursion or something and deal with it when you get back to the hotel.

I would encourage you to work on that. You will never be able to completely control everything. If you think you do now it's an illusion. Sounds like going on this trip and letting go a little bit would be good for you and your family. Hope you have a great vacation.
