Sasol Ltd. fired its co-CEOs Bongani Nqwababa and Stephen Cornell after an investigation found serious mismanagement in the development of a $13 billion chemicals plant in the U.S., tarnishing the reputation of the whole company. It’s an ignominious end for the executives, who promoted the Lake Charles facility in Louisiana as a way to transform the fortunes of the almost 70-year-old company, best known for liquid fuels from coal in South Africa. Development of the massive plant went badly wrong, with costs surging about 50% from initial plans.

Sasol’s internal probe showed that the Lake Charles project management team acted inappropriately, lacked experience and was overly focused on maintaining cost and schedule estimates instead of providing accurate information. “There was a culture of fear that was prevailing” at the project, which was fostered by previous management, Sasol Chairman Mandla Gantsho said on a call with reporters. That prevented people from coming forward, he said.

Like they say, a two quarterback system is a no quarterback system.

A major project in Louisiana goes to shite?
I, for one, and floored by this unexpected turn of events.

Someone didn’t grease the proper hands

Every large chemical expansion is sold to the board and a level well below what the actual costs are to be able to justify payback in XX months. Labor costs in S Louisiana went through the roof in the last few years with everyone trying to capitalize on cheap natural gas.
I'm sure the CEOs are leaving with a nice package.

South African company? They may get a parting gift of a tire of gasoline around their neck.

What's up with the grenade? That thing got a 6.0 in it?

Grenade is a clothing & glove brand popular with snowboarders. Odd choice of pairing for sure

I for one am totally and utterly shocked that a South African company hiring Louisiana workers could not get a project done on time and on budget. Both South Africa and Louisiana have a wonderful history of efficiency and lack of corruption. I just cannot believe this.
Yes that was sarcasm. Hey Chicken! Are we ever going to get a sarcasm font?

I guess Jaxxtyn's new bat and glove were more expensive than previously thought.

Should have hired Birdseed and Mandingo

Hmm. Turns out that paying 40 hours of overtime per week for thousands of workers is actually really expensive.

Worked on that project until they decided to pull back the new units. Complete shitshow. Supervisors more concerned about bottom line numbers than doing things the right way. Everyone too scared to bow up and say something because itd get you laid off like clockwork.
Tool room gave out hella free stuff too
Eta- Triple bogey, we were getting about 82 hours a week plus $900/week per diem when I was out there. Absolute bankrolled them

I had a buddy working on the project and was telling me he worked 7-12s for about 3-4 months straight. As much as I would like that kind of money, it wouldn't matter if you can't ever spend it.
