You could live in San Marcos and be in the middle of both.
This is a tough question to answer without knowing your situation, your age, marital status, occupation, hobbies.
I've visited both. San Antonio river walk is a great time, but I'd doubt you'll live anywhere close to it or visit that daily. Austin has a lot to do too, lots of great breweries and restaurants, outdoor activities.
Either option is better than living in Louisiana, so there's that.

I'd have to say, in the pro/con of San Antonio...this is the first time I've ever heard that.

I have several friends/family members who live in both Austin and San Antonio, and they claim they are both awesome cities to live in
They both WERE great places to live 5+ years ago. Austin's local government wants to turn Austin into LA. It's over-run with homeless now and the trash they leave behind. Much of the charm that made the city unique has disappeared and is continually diminished due to the unaffordable cost of living.
If I had to choose now, it'd probably be San Antonio.

Austin is quickly becoming a shite hole. The traffic is awful and the women are nasty.
San Marcos has some serious talent..
San Antonio is... full of.....
Texas overall is turning blue.. honestly.

The city itself probably go with SA. The surrounding area I’d go with Austin. Lake Travis and the rest of hill country is legit. Can’t go wrong with either IMO. I’d probably lean SA a little but not by a lot. Many believe the 35 corridor between the two will continue to grow and grow until the two cities are one continuous metro. That’s 15+ years away.
They compare it to Dallas & Fort Worth but I mean those two cities are only 30 miles opposed to 70 or so for SA and Austin.

Austin looks ugly. I'm not sure what all the fuss is about...
A dude in Louisiana can’t say shite about another place being ugly.

The answer is comal county. Canyon Lake, Bulverde, New Braunfels, Spring Branch. It’s between SA and Austin, a little closer to SA.
Stay out of the big cities. Enjoy the suburban America we have created for the middle class.
My wife and I settled down in Canyon Lake almost 4 years ago to raise our kids and enjoy life. It’s inexpensive, it’s safe, it’s clean, the schools are great and the recreational opportunities are endless.

I went to Austin a couple weeks ago and it was not all it is made out to be. Some parts about it were nice but since I always had heard how nice of a city it was I was dissapointed. You can definitely see the potential, but liberal policies have led to a huge homeless problem and in turn a dirty city. Smelled worst than New Orleans.
Im going back for a Bachelor party in may so I'm hoping it will be a better time when Covid (hopefully) isnt a thing

Word. I'm out here by you. I moved here in Feb 2017 from Katy. Don't miss Houston at all.
If I was going to live closer to Austin, I would have to pick west of Austin near Spicewood towards Marble Falls.

Those two cities aren't comparable in any way.

I’ve been saying the same thing for years. There’s barely any open space on the drive between Austin and San Antonio anymore. It will be a giant metroplex in probably less than 15 years.
Especially if Californians continue to flee in droves.

The city of San Antonio is 63 percent Latino, or Hispanic. And the number of people of Mexican descent is pegged at 57 percent of the population

Austin is a shithole full of metro sexual hipsters and Hillary lunatics
San Antonio is a fun place with a small town vibe and big city opportunity
