Here is one of my pond. It's not a terribly recent pic though

Do mosquitoes come out of that puppy or is there enough circulation to kill them?

Discus are a pain. They required constant monitoring. They're beautiful, but I wouldn't mess with them.

Here's some pics of my tank:

A pond is probably going to be my next project. I was thinking about doing one with shubunkin goldfish.

Yea, I tried some about 20 or so years ago, I find my marine tanks and most fish are easier. Stunning planted tank, nice work.

That tank is beautiful. I've been tempted to set one up, but I think my wife would leave me.

No mosquito problems at all. The fish eat any and all the larvae if they get in there

The only problems I've had is from raccoons, my yard people, and myself one time

Yard people sprayed weed killer around it and killed a good amount of fish

I left the hose in it for about 6 hours after a cleaning and killed everything :/

Since you started this thread, I have a question I have been wanting to ask.

Background: My mom is a big aquarium enthusiast. At her high point she had a 75 gl. saltwater, 75 gl. Oscar tank, 75 gl. African chiclid tank, 55 gl. discus/angelfish tank, and multiple 10-20 gl. community tanks with all the live bearers and such. I often helped as a young man and since then I have had a few different tanks at my house. Always had good success, but not quite as good at it as she was. I got out of the game for a few years and sold all of my equipment.

Flash forward to about 4 years ago and my wife and I bought a really nice Oceanic 75 gl. tank and stand from a guy on Barksdale air force base for dirt cheap. He said he was tired of moving around with it.

The very first time we filled it up and treated the water I bought a few community fish like mollies, guppies, etc. Within 2 weeks they were sick with ick. I treated with malachite green, turned the heat up, added aquarium salt, etc. but they all died. I drained and tried another round of community fish and had the same result. Again I drained it, flushed it, cleaned it and went with some Oscars. They lived a little over a year and grew rapidly, but eventually they began what I call de-scaling and developed white patches on them. They eventually died as well.

Pissed, I took out about 66% of the water and dumped 2 gallons of bleach in the tank. Filled it back up and ran the filters for 2 days. Drained it, changed the filter inserts, flushed it by filling it up and draining it 6+ times.

Got some more community fish and lo and behold about a month later they came down with the same disease.

Is the tank just cursed? I have never experienced such trouble. Like I said, it's an awesome Oceanic 75 gl. tank and stand with dual Magnum 350 canister filters. I think I know why the guy sold it, but I just can't wrap my mind around how the tank won't rid itself of a disease.

I check the water often and maintain the correct ph. I do 33% water changes monthly, etc.

Any ideas? Anyone ever heard of a tainted tank? Suggestions besides bleaching the shite out of it?

It's driving me crazy...

When I was a kid, we had a fish pond that I took care of. It had a koi that was a few years old, and over a foot long. I called him the Great Kamala.

Well, my mom decided she was going to add water to the pond, and did the same thing you did. I came home to find all the fish, including Great Kamala, belly up. I still haven't forgiven her.

When I was a kid my dad had a saltwater Aquarium. I know one thing, there is a lot more work keeping up with a salt water aquarium. We use to have to go catch minnows to feed.. I think... the lionfish.

They are much prettier.. With the sea anemone, clown fish, etc.. But one day he got some type of fish and within two days, all the other fish had died. If I recall he said it could have had some type of bacteria or something that killed the other fish. After that he gave it up.

It’s really not if you invest in the right equipment and setup.

Look up cycling a tank.

That needs to be done before you out fish in it

Its been some time since I had freshwater, the last FW tank I had was about 20 years or so ago. I don't think I ever had a disease outbreak. One thing that applies to both salt and freshwater fish is the fish store, bad stores =- bad luck.

In college I got really high one Saturday and found a 55 gallon tank on Craigslist. Couple buddies went with me to pick up the tank and we set off for the petstore. Decided to go salt water route, so got all the appliances, salt, dozen fish for the aquarium. Got back to the house and we set up the tank, filled it with water and salt and put the fish in. Went out that night to a party, walked in the house at 2 am and all the fish had jumped out of the tank and were dead on the ground.
I didn’t know salt water tanks had to run a few weeks with no fish to establish an ecosystem. Quick 5 second google search would have told me that.

I'm a reef tank enthusiast. Currently have a Red Sea Reefer 450 that I am thinking about upgrading to the new 700XXL model. Have quite a handful of corals and a massive blue carpet anemone.
