I had 150 gallon SW tank for about 8 years. The second happiest day of my life was conning some kids that the free shite I was giving them was a great deal.
Seriously, I enjoyed it. I had everything computerized, etc. It just became a chore to maintain at times.
I don't regret it or the money I spent on it - around 15k over the 8 years, but I would not do it again.

quote:Well, I have an aerator that keeps them alive when that happens, but that and tank crashed are why I never got into salt. I have a 100 gallon shell-dweller cichlid tank and it's pretty low maintenance at this point. Cleaning the filers is a chore, but not much of one.
Neither. I was glad when Gustav knocked out out power, making the fish go belly up, and giving me an excuse to get rid of the giant pain in the arse.
I don't know a single longtime salt water hobbyist, experienced or otherwise, who has not had at least one crash, and they can be super costly.

Katrina ruined a lot of people for aquariums; especially saltwater. A buddy of mine had a 200 gallon saltwater reef w/ live rock. He lost thousands of dollars worth of stock. He quit the hobby and never looked back.
At the time I had a cichlid tank, and not one of them frickers died, even with the power being out for 2 months.

Go with African Cichlids. They look almost like saltwater fish. They have evolved from saltwater fish after being trapped in the rift valleys. They are freshwater but do like a little mineral and salt added to the water. They are very active and somewhat smart for a fish.
They're are many different species. Here's one of my favorite called Demasoni.

I'll be honest I had no idea people still had aquariums
Feels like it was a very 80-90s thing

I'm in your boat. I got two 59 gallon tanks I'd probably give away.
I never liked the fish and no one else cleaned the tank.
Then once the snails came it was a losing battle.

I do 33% water changes monthly
There’s your problem. You should be doing that weekly and at worst bi weekly. Bad water quality is the number one reason for disease.

Pissed, I took out about 66% of the water and dumped 2 gallons of bleach in the tank. Filled it back up and ran the filters for 2 days. Drained it, changed the filter inserts, flushed it by filling it up and draining it 6+ times.
Got some more community fish and lo and behold about a month later they came down with the same disease.
Is the tank just cursed? I have never experienced such trouble. Like I said, it's an awesome Oceanic 75 gl. tank and stand with dual Magnum 350 canister filters. I think I know why the guy sold it, but I just can't wrap my mind around how the tank won't rid itself of a disease.
I check the water often and maintain the correct ph. I do 33% water changes monthly, etc.
Any ideas? Anyone ever heard of a tainted tank? Suggestions besides bleaching the shite out of it?
It's driving me crazy..
Did you let the tank cycle for a few weeks before you tossed the fish in?
And to the poster that recomended Demasoni...by far one of the best cichlids. Mean little badtards though. I had a 75 gal full of those and dubosi. Got out of the hobby but thinking about doing a 120 tang. Lake tank

I have done both. Limited time with saltwater however. Many years ago I had a 200 gallon that had a custom stand I made myself. (It could also have served as a tornado shelter) Was planning on a reef tank. Had cycled it and was slowly introducing more fish...then a total loss house fire while I was camping.
Had a smaller saltwater tank more recently but with kids and other home projects it became too time consuming.
My daughter and I actually just started planning a freshwater planted aquarium. Her idea, gives us something to do that she is interested in.

We had a guppy tank, big enough for about 13 of them with ghost shrimp, snails, live plants. They all ideas within about 1.5 years probably due to my laziness of not cleaning enough... became too much of a PITA to keep clean
