(Sept. 22, 2022 – ATLANTIC OCEAN) – Today, Saildrone, Inc. and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released video footage gathered by a Saildrone uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) from inside Hurricane Fiona, a Category 4 hurricane, barreling across the Atlantic Ocean.
quote:

The Saildrone Explorer SD 1078 was directed into the midst of Hurricane Fiona, which is currently on a path northward in the Atlantic Ocean and is predicted to impact Bermuda on Thursday night and the Canadian province of Nova Scotia on Friday. Hurricane Fiona is the first Category 4 storm of the 2022 season. SD 1078 is battling 50-foot waves and winds measured over 100 mph to collect critical scientific data and, in the process, is giving us a completely new view of one of Earth’s most destructive forces.

Inside the storm, SD 1078 is sailing at sustained speeds over 9 mph. At one moment, it reached a peak speed of 39.7 mph while surfing down a massive wave. The vehicle is currently 315 nm southwest of Bermuda.

I wonder if there would be any way for a human to possibly survive in those conditions.

Some sort of specially designed pod or something?

ETA: wait, I thought of something

Not in a storm like Ivan, with a rogue wave that was 90+ feet tall and 600 feet long. Data from Ivan suggests there were likely other rogue waves near 130ft high.

There's no surving that.

Big swells, not a lot of breakers. One could have ridden that out in a Hobie cat.

I remember watching footage of oil platforms during Katrina and Rita.

This video shows a bunch of other storms around the world.

So famous the car wash renamed itself "Blue Shed Car Wash" (and you can take pictures beside it).

Brave? For every boat that survived, I’d bet another dozen drowned. How’d that work out for them? The only place I see them now are on football helmets.

Seems like the Darwin Award is the new Viking Award.

The only ones that were winning were the ones banging the wives of those dudes that would rather share a rowboat with a bunch of other dudes.

I think one of these, with multiple layers, much larger and weighted to self-right would work. Youll be hella disoriented, but alive.

Nope. They started out. They tried. Then, they drowned if they encountered that stuff.
