Safelight replacement windshields

Does anyone know if the non OEM windshields are worth a shite? My insurance company won’t pay for the original windshield on the car. If there’s a big difference in quality I will pay the difference to get the OEM glass. Anyone know if I should shell out the extra cash?

The installation is what matters.

I’ve never had a problem with Safelight, but I found much cheaper local options that are just as good. Just replaced a windshield in my truck (2017 Sierra with the rain sensor) for less than $200. I think safelight was gonna be close to double that.

Don't do the cheap wind shields with Safelight.
I had one installed on my old truck because it was up for inspection and had a crack across the windshield. Went to Safelight, and they knocked the price down to around or less than $200. Don't remember what it was exactly, but they knocked a good chunk off so as not go through insurance.
A couple of months later, a rock slings off of a dump truck tire.
Because, you know, frick everyone else; I'm not cleaning my truck off. Damn truck drivers piss me off sometimes.
Anyway, took it to a local repair shop in Prairieville. After fixing it, the guy asked me where I got the windshield, and then said those cheap safelight windshields are about half as think as a normal windshield, and I was lucky that rock didn't shatter the windshield (it was already a quarter sized star as it was).
Moral of the story: be wary of the cheap option.

These things are junk and will crack in a stiff wind.

Safelite repairs, Safelite replace.
That’s mostly all I got other than I’ve got a good local one.

FYI, Safelight also sells glass to local shops.
If you go the local shop route, make sure they are buying from PPG, Pilkington, or for high end cars, straight from the dealership. Safelight glass is mostly crap.

Safelite no longer makes their own glass. They buy it from the same sources PGW, and Pilinkgton do. A rock hitting a windshield on the highway is gonna likely crack it whether it's OEM or a glass from Mexico. All glass is made to the same standards required by the glass industry.
There are definitely some cheaper local options, but some of them are butchers who use tools that are outdated by a decade and will be hard to find when your glass begins to leak. Definitely do some research and if a price seems too low, it probably is too good to be true. The one good thing about going to safelite is that their warranty will always hold up and if you have a real problem and complain enough, chances are you'll get that bitch for almost free.
If you're not going through insurance and don't have some crazy complicated foreign vehicle (newer mercedes, bmw, etc) you should expect to pay no more than 125 to 150 for install on top of the glass price. If you have a common vehicle(domestic truck or sedan) the glass is probably costing the company only 50 to 75 bucks. If it's a super common windshield (f150, silverdao, etc) that glass is probably costing the installer less than 50. Some as cheap as 30 bucks.

If a rock shatters your windshield in a literal sense, you've got a big, potentially fatal, probably

Insurance only has to pay for a comparable windshield, but they cannot dictate where you take it. Go to your dealership. You will get OEM there I'm sure.

In Baton Rouge I've used Capital Glass & Mirror for years. They do excellent work and I've had one windshield leak in probably 15 years of using them. They fixed it on my lunch break with no appointment necessary. I've referred them to co-workers and family many times. About normal on cost but the installation/service is the best.

Safelite did my Yukon and Sierra windshields. Happy with their installations so they also did my Tacoma. 2 of 3 are still good but the Sierra had a rock slung against it within a week of the repair and it shot a crack across it next day. Buzzards luck on that scenario. Phuckin dump trucks......
