I guess it’s more me thinking about when I was all gung Ho and ready to go to war (so I thought) and how it’s probably some wet behind the ears young men sitting in that tank, sent there because an oligarch wants a piece of territory.

I was one of those wet behind the ears tankers 30 years ago. Was it scary when we crossed the berm? You’re damn right it was.

Do tell.

It’s an attempt by the USMC to get back to its core expeditionary and amphibious mission. The United States already has a large land army, it’s even called the “United States Army,” and we don’t need another one. The goal is to be lighter and smaller and to focus more on the maritime and quasi special operations aspects of warfare as opposed to being setup to fight large pitched ground battles with enemy armies.

It's easy to manipulate the herd into launching a full-scale "Military/Weapon Dick Measuring Contest" - all that's necessary is to start a thread on the topic. After that, the contest to demonstrate that "I am the smartest military knowledge guy in the room" commences with gusto!

Total Vehicle Kill (they dead) versus a Mobility Kill (it can no longer move but it can still fight).

Was that really ever a threat? Did Putin really threaten to invade a NATO country?

That…shooting fish in a barrel.

There’s no glory or honor or even dignity in that sort of thing. Someone at a computer pushing buttons and erasing lives thousands of miles away, like a goddamned video game

I guess the Russians should have secured the skies before moving all those vehicles in.

It's the new reality of war.

They probably are.

If you pay attention to US media, it's 100% obvious you're getting bullshitted.

I don't think anyone really knows what's happening.

Not really. The towns where there have significant destruction are the ones where heavy ground combat is taking place like Mariupol or Kherson, is to be expected. It’s not like Russia is just Willy Nilly bombing random building for fun despite what you see on Twitter or CNN. If that were the case then Ukrainian civilian casualties would be in the 10’s if not 100’s of thousands.

I have to take issue with this. Ants wage war. Chimps wage war. Chimpanzee war. It’s definitely not a wholly human thing.

Hold on homie… you confusing natural territorial instincts with WAR… war is wholly human… check your history books…wars have and will always advance society….

When I say “humanity” I don’t mean anything close to “genteel”. But hand to hand combat is categorically more “human” than someone thousands of miles away pressing a button and wiping out people with a drone.

I get it to an extent, but I don't find any fault with warfare of this type in the circumstances.

I remember when we were taking lots of roadside bomb losses and people talked about how cowardly those acts were. There was certainly a part of me that thought - "Is it really different from a Predator you can't see dispatching you while you smoke a cig?"

Now, I don't care because that's not my team, but it didn't seem intellectually honest if we're focused solely on the medium for the attack.

You are right. Putin bombed the f' out of Mariupol.

But what would the OT do now? I mean Biden and NATO has already fricked up by not fortifying Ukraine with weapons and negotiating BEFORE the invasion but in the current disposition, what do you think should be done now? I see basically two choices, 1. escalation and 2. de-escalation.

Escalation can involve anything from supplying Ukraine with NATO weapons to full blown direct conflict with Russia. Regardless escalation will lead to more death.

Then there is de-escalation. Would Russia annexing the Donbass region (people want to join Russia anyway), Crimea get recognized as Russian by NATO and western Ukraine remains neutral be acceptable?

But all the war gaming is to fight in small groups that are extremely hard to detect (and then wipe out). Armor has no place there because it’s easy to detect.

All the war gaming? Seriously? While there has been an increase of focus and expanding of capabilities along those lines given how much asymmetric warfare has been the need, to claim that the traditional model of an mechanized force spearheaded by a a fist of MBTs is outdated is absurd.

It was not the focus of Trident Juncture or Spring Storm. And when NATO mobilized in response to the Ukraine invasion, more armored brigades were sent rather than the more mobile Stryker forces that fit the mold you speak of.

The propaganda is thick on both sides. There's also a lot of outright made up bs too.
