Well, in my opinion, the sad truth is that due to the culture that's prevalent in the Middle East, Assad being in control of Syria is probably for the best. History shows that democracy just does not work in that part of the world. I know we in the U.S. want everyone around the world to live in open democracies, but that does not work everywhere. Look at the chaos that's come from the Arab Spring or the chaos that followed the fall of Saddam in Iraq. The only way to keep the Middle East stable is for strong leaders with dictatorial powers to be in charge.

For a long time we've misguidedly been seeking a "free & democratic" Middle East and this has directly let to much of the strife and instability we're seeing today across the region. Instead, we should be focused simply on a "stable & quiet" Middle East.

I have often wondered if Russia has or will allow Iranian personnel to work on developing design and material offsite in Russia away from prying eyes and inspections..

That doesn't make any sense. If Russia wanted Iran to have nukes they could just email a PDF of the schematics. Why go through the trouble of bringing Iranian scientist to Russian soil to work on an Iranian bomb?

You are aware that most of the advancements on Iran's nuclear program have come via Russian assistance, right?
Also, to your point. The whole world, and especially Israel, is closely watching everything that goes on in Iran that has anything to do with nuclear power. In fact, Israel in the past several years has done more to slow down Iran's march to the bomb than anyone else in the world by killing Iran's top nuclear scientists. Of course Obama pressured Israel to stop killing Iranian nuclear scientists last year. I wonder why?. Os as you can see, the security risks of developing Iran's nuclear program inside Iran is risky. It's safer to send those scientists to Russia where they can do their work in a much more secure area away from the prying eyes of the world.

Russia can't just give Iran some of it's own bombs. If something happens and that bomb were used, even worse, given to terrorist and then used, and it's traced back to having been a Russian made bomb, then the political ramifications against Russia will be huge. It's best, and more profitable, for Russia to sell Iran the tools and know-how to build it's own bomb.
