What we're seeing in the Middle East, from the rise of ISIS, the fracturing of Iraq, the civil war in Syria, and now the emergence of Russia as a major player once again in the Middle East are all a direct consequence of the US disengaging from it's leadership role in the Middle East.
When Obama basically abandoned Iraq and Afghanistan, then showed he was a weak and feckless leader with his empty "red line" threat in Syria, and now has bent over and grabbed his ankles in the deal with Iran, he showed the world that the US is no longer the world leader it once was. This move created a power vacuum in the region. and as the old saying goes, politics abhors a vacuum. The first result in the US pulling back was the rise of ISIS. Now, Russia is stepping in to fill the role the US once held. The only question lest is what will the long term consequences be for this power shift in the Middle East and what that means for us.

We don't even have any of our own bases left open in that country. All that's left now is a skeletal force to help train the Afghan army. People are still deploying to Afghanistan right now and special operations will be going on for a long time.

How about we talk about the vacuum created in Iraq when we deposed Saddam? Strongmen are always better than ideologues. I'll take secular Assad over ISIS any day any century.

Just because a handful of troops get deployed to a country does not mean there's a war going on, at lest not a war we're fighting. Yeah there's still a war in Afghanistan, but this administration, while allowing US troops to stay in that country, are not willing to fight that war.
