I just listened to a plant baw explain how to run your generator through your dryer outlet to power your house during an outage to a helper.

I can't believe people still do this. I'm sure there will be a GoFundMe soon to help replace all of that guy's belongings after the house fire.

Backfed my house after Ida for a day or so while we were out.

Or are you not understanding that the generator is plugged into the power outlet for the dryer to power the home?

ETA we shut off the main breaker. My BIL was also there and he’s an electrician. We were safe as were anyone working in any lines nearby.

I thought about doing that once. Then I said nah. I'll just use my portable generator, extension cords, window units, and flashlights.

It works. Just plug it in. Nothing more to it.

Fire's not the issue. The current won't overload things.

The real problem is it back energizes the line and could injure those working to return power. FWIW, My grandfather was a linesman his whole life.

I can't picture how using that outlet and breaker powers additional runs.

Not really the issue. The issue is that you are backfeeding your neighborhood unless you pull your meter.

If someone has to explain it to you, it’s not for you. A person should UNDERSTAND how this works before attempting it. You don’t. Don’t try it.

That’s why you turn off the main breaker to the house if you do this…

I understand exactly how it works, I'm not the one attempting it.

Years ago, some guys that camp near our hunting club tried this in an old mobile home camp and burned it down. It was their first night in the camp.

well then it must have been extremely old wiring. modern wiring running to a dryer can easily handle the load from a generator.

modern generators have breakers and you are going to a breaker. no real risk of fire

if you understand it so well...you would understand that
