I think I can safely state that 30% of the SJA/CHS student population hail from the AP

No it isn't. Do you live in the area? Do you know any kids who went to school there? Do you have any kids went to school there?

I grew up in Baton Rouge and knew quite a few kids who went there. They were not well-off. Not even close.

Did you go there? I seem to have hit a nerve.

I think those East Bank AP’ers who insist on sending their kids to Catholic High are the reason traffic is a complete shitshow in the morning

FIFY

The traffic volume in AP on days BR schools are closed is remarkable

AP folks that send their kids to SJA/CHS are try-hards. They’re there for the social prestige. Ascension Catholic wouldn’t give them that.

If they Only cared about their kids’ education, they’d send them to Dutchtown or St. Amant

You are out your mind if you think old money Donaldsonville would let Ascension Catholic move from the West Bank.

I always thought that was just a backup due to the retarded volume of traffic on 73 going up to DTHS

If you think Dutchtown or St Amant competes academically with Catholic High and St Joseph's Academy you smoke to much pot.

The difference in quality is almost negligible. The difference in commute and tuition is astronomical. If I was raising kids on the East Bank of AP, there is zero chance I would send my kids to Catholic or SJA.

If I was raising kids in BR, though, Catholic would be my number one choice for a boy. I’d be a little worried about sending a daughter to St. Joe’s, tbh. That place is brutal.

The school was in trouble when they fired Greg Brandao for fundamental differences on how a school should be run. Several families packed up and left because Brandao, for a change, was communicating with the parents and looking for input. Runnels, on the other hand, had kept the school finances under lock and key. The fundamental differences was Brandao wanted to move the school ahead - apply for grants, get blue ribbon recognition etc, but that would require you opening up you books to scrutiny. Runnels had made some shady financial decisions in the past and they were coming home to roost so he bounced Brandao. Runnels took a guy, who was known as a top notch administrator around the state, and publicly said he did not know how to run a school. If the writing was not on the wall when Runnels turned down a fully funded STEM program in the the early 2000s, it was on the wall loud and clear 4-5 years ago. I feel sorry for the people who trusted Runnels and drank the koolaid.

CD gives out a tons of scholarships for kids who might not be able to afford to attend. Between donors and tuition approaching $20k a year scholarships are totally doable. I never knew of CD being more artsy then any other private school in the area though.

Do you know if they were properly insured when the flood hit? The article mentioned "flood debt" which tell me that perhaps they were not.

I was told they had flood insurance but that didn’t include contents. I wasn’t told what the overall flood restoration costs were but I know there were significant donations for lost books, etc.

Our kid is in 7th grade at Runnels and we’ve had a positive experience and have felt it was good value compared to the other offerings in our area.

It is my understanding Dr. Runnels has been covering the operating deficit for the last 10 years on his own but is no longer able to do that.

Not sure what the future holds but it’s not up to us, mainly up to the people having to enroll for 9th grade next year.

They did state they would escrow tuition and donations to be refunded should the decision to close be made before the school year starts.

PBS tuition has gone up a pretty big chunk the last couple of years.

I graduated from Runnels...this is 100% accurate

I know five friends kids that graduated from Runnels. One cardiologist, one mechanical engineer, one attorney, one sculpter and one writer. All very successful in their chosen fields and all five amazing musicians.

Sports Annie Fink will win the Cross Country State Championship next Monday in Natchitoches and Runnels should win team state. Great CC and track teams.

If your kid is smart, the AP courses and early college programs at STAHS and DTHS are on par with anything CHS/SJA have to offer

Just went their yesterday and noticed the H.S. parking lot had fewer cars than I’ve seen in the last 5 years. My son went there, and I thought it was a fine school. I think it’s just demographics. Most of the private schools in Baton Rouge have declining enrollments.
