Romans or Mongolians? Which one cost the world more?

The Romans burned down the library in Alexandria under Caesar and it’s claimed that set civilization back hundreds of years.
The Mongols sacked Baghdad and destroyed the House of Wisdom in Baghdad.
Which one cost the world more?

Romans at least tried to improve technology and their culture was used as the basis (along with Greeks) for the renaissance.
Mongolia did not as we know practically nothing of their culture, and certainly don’t employ many Mongolian tactics, ideas, or philosophies today

Mongols also brought the Black Plague with them, so I’m inclined to give it to them. The Mongols were good for trade, but the Romans provide a base for Western Civilization. Go back and read Roman writings, and I suspect you will identify with them more than Christians in the Middle Ages.

I think you’ll find very few if any real historians who would say either set back mankind at all.
