The New Orleans accent has always had hints of New England dialect. I think people trace it to the Italian immigrants.

This is not news, you Twitter idiot. (not OP, the twitter bitch)

She'd know this if she ever read A Confederacy of Dunces even if she's never been to New Orleans

I think that some people are so emotionally driven that they don't take the time to think about what they are saying before they say it. She needs to understand someone's culture and background before she attacks it.

The New Orleans accent has been done so poorly over the years by Hollywood that people that haven’t spent much time there have no idea what it really sounds like

I remember going on a Senior Trip in high school and a lot people were surprised to hear that we weren't from Brooklyn/Queens.

I can't tell you the amount of time someone from outside of NOLA asked me if I was from NY. Hell, I work with a lady from NY, and she just assumed I was from there as well. She would ask me what schools I went to and ask me how much better if was living down here in the winter.

I'd imagine there are a lot of people not from South Louisiana that don't know about the Yat accent. My wife isn't from Louisiana and said it surprised her the first time she heard it.

I'd also imagine that like many other regional dialects, it's becoming less common. I've noticed that younger people attempt to speak without an accent, even a Southern one.

NOLA yat accent sounds almost identical to a New Yorker accent with a few differences. Certain words have a drawl but I could tell she was from Nola during her interviews yesterday. It was faint but like everyone has said, it was there. Made me feel warm and fuzzy.

In all seriousness, there is some legitimacy to that observation. The New Orleans accent does have some similarities to the New York accent. A.J. Liebling recognized this at the beginning of his book, "The Earl of Louisiana".
