The statement reads: “The scarcity of our products is not a strategy on our part. Our current production cannot meet the existing demand in an exhaustive way, at least not without reducing the quality of our watches – something we refuse to do as the quality of our products must never be compromised. This level of excellence requires time, and as we have always done, we will continue to take the necessary time to ensure that all our watches not only comply with our standards of excellence, but also meet the expectations of our customers in terms of quality, reliability and robustness. Rolex does not compromise on what it takes to produce exceptional watches.”

“All Rolex watches are developed and produced in-house at our four sites in Switzerland. They are assembled by hand, with extreme care, to meet the brand’s unique and high-quality standards of quality, performance and aesthetics. Understandably, this naturally restricts our production capacities – which we continue to increase as much as possible and always according to our quality criteria.”

“Finally, it should be noted that Rolex watches are available exclusively from official retailers, who independently manage the allocation of watches to customers.”

It's people clamoring for ANYTHING they think will actually hold value.

This is just a dog whistle to all the Covid toilet paper hoarders.

Now they're going to buy all the rolexs up!

There are plenty of SS Professional Rolexes being made to satisfy demand outside or 2020 when they made about 600k watches they make about a million a year, most are stainless. The issue is the gray market scoops them up as fast as they can and hordes them to sell them at 50-100+% over retail. I have a friend who is a broker in SOFL and has over 20 never-worn Hulks sitting in his safe along with 100s of other never-worn Subs and GMTs. If people would quit paying stupid premiums there would be no issues, but apparently they won't since this has been going on for at least 5 years now.

If you want a Pepsi or any of the other hot Rolex watches you can get one, it will just cost time or money. Rolex isn't going to expand and make more and aren't going to dedicate more production to steel watches when the higher profit watches also need to be made.

There are also plenty of other great watches for more or less than a Rolex costs.

A further reality is the really hot watches have been driven by FOMO. 5-7 years ago I would show pics of my AP RO, my PP Nautiluses and Aquanaut and many would point out how ugly and old fashioned they were and pictures of Rolexes would elicit a snooze. A lot of those same people are frustrated because they can't go buy them at retail the only thing that changed is other people's apparent desire.

It sounds like more of a high demand issue rather than a low supply issue.

You know we fricked up our monetary policy when we justified trillions of dollars of debt to “save businesses”… businesses still are destroyed… but the demand for Rolexes and other luxury items is at an all time high.

We fricked up something real good on this one. I have a feeling we will regret it.

The smarter buyers/investors are the ones figuring out what will skyrocket in value next. They were the ones buying every Rolex they could get three or four years ago.

This right here. Why would an AD sell a sub to Mr. Smith who had a good Christmas bonus when they can offload a sub and a bunch of those two tone ladies datejusts to the flipper? The flipper will be back to buy the undesirable models along with some high demand ones. The flipper makes his money back and more, the AD moves stock, the guy who wants a Rolex and is willing to pay the markup is happy. It's only an issue if you want a watch and don't have the, as you said, time or money to get one.

It’s important to let people know you can afford to purchase items that cost the same amount as a used Toyota Corolla.
