If you are a veteran, the Roanoke V.A. is a great place.

Smith Mountain Lake is awesome.

Great spot. My friends and I do a mountain lake vacation every year and did that one year. Great views, clean, clear, deep lake, nice weather.

I will add that if you are into outdoor stuff the Upper Cumberland area in Tennessee is wonderful. I live in Cookeville TN and we are surrounded by lakes and waterfalls.

Hearing the hills around Windfall (RIP) have become fertile with retiree homes. Hope East Lex is still running tabs.

Zollmans is still happening. Jim is no longer with us at East Lex. And the days of $34 Natty Light kegs are a fond memory.

I grew up in western VA in the Shenandoah Valley and have relatives in Roanoke, etc. It's a great place for retirement...lots to do, great climate with 4 seasons which avoid the extremes. Not a bad drive to many other nice places.

Those Appalachian area college towns seem like the perfect place to retire to me

Yep. I’m targeting either coastal NC/SC or a place in the mountains in GA/TN/NC or VA.

Roanoke was a great place pre Covid, back in the 1500s, but then the homeless moved in. It’s a typical democrat run city.

A Lady friend lives in Salem, Va. She indicated Roanoke is a dangerous place to visit. She tries to avoid it.
