I read they are horrible to repair minor body damage as the panels are not very replacable. Insurance rates were higher because they tended to be totalled quicker, for no parts, or parts not replacable

They’re selling low but making it up on volume!!
You laugh, but that is the goal. The more they sell, the cheaper these trucks become to manufacture. At some point, they hope manufacturing costs decrease enough to hit break-even or profit margins.

Yep they're a giant PITA to fix from everything i've heard. They wanted a super stiff chassis and they did that by making pretty much the entire thing structural.

Guy I do some work with was an intern with RJ at Ford and he told me there was a big pissing match over some supply chain issues. RJ wanting to go with higher quality but more expensive and Ford wanting them to use their existing suppliers. IDK how true it is but it's probably part of the story.

In two years, Rivian has blown through half of its $18 billion cash pile, in part because it struggled to master the nuts and bolts of manufacturing. While production is now growing and losses have narrowed, Rivian still loses money on its vehicle sales. In an industry known for narrow margins and tough competition, Rivian pays too much for parts and produces too few vehicles to cover its costs.
quote:
As of the end of September, Rivian had only built a total of around 65,000 vehicles, a fraction of what other car companies manufacture at a single U.S. factory in a year. Even with output increasing, Rivian’s factory in Normal, Ill., is operating at less than one-third of its build capacity. It aims to produce 52,000 vehicles this year.
In a free market id say no.

I don't know of any fed subsidies they've gotten.
I have to assume they've gotten something through DoE or DOT.

someone in my neighborhood bought one when they were first released. I saw it on the back of a roll off wrecker two times. He no longer owns it fyi.

I don’t think they have.

Interesting. I see a relative ton of them around Louisisana. Also see a ton of transporters full of Lucids on I-10.

that was the price of a truck 20 years ago, todays base model trucks start at $45k for a standard tranny with a 4 cylinder engine

"All that comes at a cost. Rivian vehicles sell for over $80,000 on average. Yet they’re so expensive to build that in the second quarter the company lost $33,000 on every one it sold. That’s roughly the starting price of a base model Ford F-150."
will they survive?
How much of that is soft costs? As they sell more units, it drives the per unit soft cost down.

These articles typically do a bad job of understanding/informing how capex and amortization work.

My buddy had their SUV delivered about two weeks ago. That thing is awesome.

Nope. Try about $40K for a bare bones F150
