Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.). “Getting towed is a very non-partisan experience.”

Van Hollen knows the experience too well.

“I was at a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, literally ran in for takeout,” he explained. His car was towed in “less than 90 seconds,” he said.

This isn't a good excuse if you parked illegaly

I think these scumbags need to be dealt with but if a car is parked in a tow away zone it shouldn't matter how long. The part that needs reform is how much they can charge for the tow and storage fees.

In his neck of the woods, Montgomery County, that tow will add at least $150 onto whatever errand you were trying to run. Expensive moo shu

Surprised some crazy hillbilly in SW Va hasn't killed them yet.

I had my car towed from Northgate. Apparently, they take all the vehicles from that area into the CVS parking lot and then transport from there. Guess who walked over to CVS and got his damn car back.

Obviously it would be fraud and you'd be completely fricked if the court found out, but if this happened to me I would love to get my car back from the illegal staging lot and then sue them for getting my car stolen.

Not worth the risk of getting popped for fraudulently bringing suit, along with insurance fraud, but it'd be great if you could somehow completely frick riverside over for doing this illegal practice.

"The ones who make millions of dollars baiting deserted parking lots and using spotters at all hours of the night to tow you away."

what do they mean "baiting" deserted parking lots?

moving cars into parking lots of abandoned businesses so it looks like it's okay to park there, and then tow the cars that aren't the staged cars there. Riverside used to do this is 1998 at the empty Delchamp's supermarket lot next to Plantation Trace apartments.

well everybody is on the take with Riverside in Baton Rouge apparently - otherwise these business owners would not use them KNOWING how much their customers hate the company. by name

Here's a tip if you don't wanna get fricked with

Back your vehicle into your parking spot.
Turn your tires full lock.
Set your parking break.

It doesn't work that way. I have seen tow truck personnel jimmy the lock on vehicles' doors so they can get inside the vehicle and make necessary adjustments to make their tow job easier. I had always thought that "breaking into a car" was illegal, but I guess that tow truck drivers can do it without penalty.

Unfortunately, this will only allow them to use special equipment such as "slide outs" and then charge you extra money. For information about what you can do to stop predatory towing by Riverside and others, join up at LINK

It is amazing that no one does anything to stop their improper activities. They were recently found guilty of illegal towing and all they got was a little fine.

A better tip is to file a complaint with the state police and get all of your money back. I will be glad to tell you how to do it.

The staging lots are big time illegal. You should report them to the State Police.

That practice is big time illegal. I would love to know the details of this. They got in trouble with the state police for this before. If they were caught again, they might actually get their license suspended. Please post the details or call amnd let me know.

If Riverside did that you should file a complaint with the State Police and demand compensation.
