Believe it or not, River Bend nuclear plant officially opened 40 years ago today. 6/16/86

No meltdowns.

No 3-headed deer in the nearby woods.

Any scare stories over 40 years?

I remember going on a school field trip there. It was definitely a bit more than 40 years ago, so it must have been while it was still under construction.

All I can recall is feeling really gypped because all they did was sit us down in some drab lobby of their office and give us a boring presentation about how safe it all was.

This was probably right around after the Three Mile Island deal, so I guess they figured they needed to propagandize school kids.

I was just completely bummed thinking we were gonna get to tour the freaking nuclear reactor.

Hell, they made us take turns riding the bike to generate electricity. Nuclear my arse, I know what they do there.

Same with Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant in Alabama. They’ve been operating for over 50 years.

neat

Been there two times , but not recently and never into the containment area, dudes with M-16 were manning the guard shacks at the time, not sure if that is still the case. Its a very impressive place, same thing with Waterford 3 down by New Orleans, been there once.

My father worked for Stone & Webster in the late 1970s out there at River Bend.

I actually went inside of a nuclear reactor while it was being reworked. I got the tour and it was pretty amazing. I walked within 8 feet of the primary containment.

It was like a ship in a bottle.
