Maybe the rules should be tightened up so it’s for the ones who really need it. This gets done by advocacy in veterans organizations
I'm not in any veteran organizations and don't care to be and I specifically quoted and responded to
quote:

It’s this behavior honorable veterans should police among their own. It’s seriously hurting your reputation as veterans.
which makes no mention of "advocacy through veterans organizations" and instead places the onus on ALL "honorable veterans" to go out of our way to make you feel better about who's using handicapped spots.

I'm telling you that I have no obligation or desire to do anything to change you or anyone else's opinion about veterans. I didn't care what the average a-hole thought in 2003 when he was blasting Toby Kieth out of his truck and calling anyone who disagreed with sending my arse to third world shithole a traitor, and I certainly don't care about him crying over parking spots now that we've came home and he wants to pretend like he wasn't all in on supporting the war at the time.

Filling for full disability benefit has its own cottage industry now. Go sit at a bar with a group of enlisted folks and the conversation will always turn to the next documentation they need to try and get and how many more things they need to file for and how to file certain things, so they can guarantee they get the 100%. It's like they don't even try to hide it.

My neighbor is a “disabled veteran” that drives a lifted f250 and hunts/fishes all the time. Unclear what his disability is, Ive never asked. Otherwise nice guy and good neighbor.

Probably like my dirtbag cousin. He never saw combat but somehow got PTSD. I would shoot the worthless pos right in the face myself if I didn't think it would land me in prison.

This is tough because how are you supposed to know what someone went through? Obviously a pencil pusher being "disabled" is different from someone who go hurt in theater or training. I'd err on most disabilities being legit, but it is a government entity at the end of the day so hard to think fraud isn't happening.

There is a ton of misunderstanding about VA disability even among vets. The rules are very different from SS disability. It is compensation for injuries and ongoing illness sustained in service not disability payment because you can't work (that's a separate program) Not sure about LA but in FL DV tags don't entitle you to handicap parking unless they have the handicap logo too (police should enforce.) No one is getting 100% for a single joint injury or full VA medical care due to one 10% rating but they will treat that rated condition. Like it or not the system isn't there only for combat vets. Some vets still dont get this and like my father dont think they've really earned benefits so dont even apply despite decades of service an associated injuries and illness. The VA math is also misunderstood. You don't simply add conditions to get a disability rating. (50%+50% doesn't equal 100%) Each additional condition just counts as that percent of the remainder (50%+50%=75%) another 10% rating would then only be 2.5%. Plenty of misconceptions

I remember a family friend who was a veteran when I was a kid who used to say, "There are no bigger bums than VA bums." He was correct.

the volume of comments in this thread shows there’s an issue that could impact veterans respected place in our society.

If I placed a value on issues based on comments on this board I would be forced to conclude that tip prompts at fast food restaurants and the size of the chicken fingers at Raising Cane's were the two biggest issues facing society today but sure.

I’m trying to figure how this would bother you or affect you in any way.

Met a young vet with PTSD. His very first assignment in the Middle East was morgue duty. That would mess me up at 18 also.

Of all the crazy shite I’ve seen people bitch about on here, I never thought I’d see someone bitching about disabled veterans.

It's a pretty edgy take but it's not completely off base. There are a lot of moochers in the system. I think a lot of what gets claimed as PTSD is simply a tough time adjusting from military back to civilian life. That's a tough transition even if you've never fired a shot in anger.

With the billions they are sending to Ukraine, Israel and all these other countries plus all the dead beats living on government assistanceI hope all veterans find a way to get a few thousand a month and any tax benefit they can.

Add in all the illegal aliens coming across the border too collecting our tax dollars.

it's not the actual disabled veterans, it's complete cottage industry created to help every veteran disabled or not to push paperwork and work the system to do whatever they can to get their slice

Have they recently changed the criteria to become DV?

No, but what has changed is the tracking. Today's enlistees have been warned by my generation to DOCUMENT everything. Why? Because a few years down the road when you can't sleep because of the ringing in your ears the VA can't dent it was because of the explosions you were around.

Same with backs and knees. I am not sure what level of rating (the system the VA uses to determine disability level) it takes to get special plates but if I would have been smarter about documenting my shite I would qualify.

There are jobs in the military that absolutely chew you up.

I’ve met people who were faking but also knew people who came home from their third or fourth tour and killed themselves. I just hope the help is there in the future for those who need it. Humans, esp Americans are overly reactionary and I would hate to see the pendulum swing back to Vietnam Era treatment of veterans or anything even close.

How do you feel about folks living off the government who have never served their country in any capacity, much less worked a day in their life? I’d be in favor of cutting all of that off and giving it to veterans who are lucky enough to still be alive.

It’s called loopholes were found then exploited. There are organizations that assist veterans in getting more % disability even after discharge.

I know two personally. Both work full time, hunt, fish, etc. Nothing wrong with either. The one I’m closest to, told me how the game is played. I’m not mad at either, perhaps a bit disappointed.
