Back as a kid, I remember most DVs missing legs or hit with shrapnel and things like that. More severe cases.
When you were a kid, how would you have been aware of anything but the visually obvious cases? It sounds like you're only aware of the others from processing their paperwork or in some way assisting in helping them buy cars. Were you processing a lot of paperwork or selling cars as a kid?

Now the cases, based on assumption alone, seem to be minor.

Some cases are minor. Hearing loss and things like that. They don't receive the same benefits as someone who lost their legs but both are considered disabled.

Before she passed, my wife was paralyzed. She had a motorized wheelchair and we used an accessible van with a side ramp for wheelchair access. There were so many times I had to park far out to ensure ramp access because all the handicapped spaces were filled with DV plates. 90% of the drivers of those vehicles I saw had no visible physical disability. Just this week I saw two stroll out to their cars in handicap spaces.

You veterans who blindly defend this behavior should consider policing your own. I couldn’t care less about DVs at this point. Helping a paralyzed woman with a terminal disease through a parking lot because of some asshat with a % disability from a twisted knee will do that to you.

I'm considered 100% disabled but I sure as hell don't park in a handicapped parking sspot.I thank God I still have the ability to walk a few spaces down from the store. I know there are some DVs not so lucky, but as others have said not all disabilities can be seen with a first glance.

My neighbor is a “disabled veteran” that drives a lifted f250 and hunts/fishes all the time. Unclear what his disability is, Ive never asked. Otherwise nice guy and good neighbor.

There's an older guy at work who was calling himself a "gulf War ERA veteran". He fell out his box stand last year and broke his hip. After that he started calling himself a disabled vet. Technically true I guess

Just checked my list of things I give a frick about and your opinion about veterans wasn't on it.

This.

Combat veteran here. Several of the folks I served with would advocate what to say to get a higher % rating. Some guys just accepted what was offered. Some guys quietly bore their injuries and didn't want anything. The book "Tribe" by Sebastian Junger has some good insights into this dynamic.

Do you have DV plates and park in handicap spaces?
Nope and nope. And I'm not going to spend my time pulling stolen valor duty on handicapped parking spots at Walmart because you've seen a few people out of a group of millions being shitty people either.

A lot of vets are assholes just like a lot of people are assholes. Because vets are just people. Spend your time stewing about it. I don't give a shite.

I know a guy who claims to be disabled vet (I’m not sure if he actually gets any of the benefits). He shattered his ankle playing basketball about 6 months after air force basic training and was discharged.

One of my baws got a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan.
His vehicle got bombed, 2 baws with him killed.

He had issues with alcohol etc afterwards.

Went to PTSD rehab for veterans.
He stated that 90% there were juicing the system, as in they'd never had a shot fired at them etc. Said most were non combat playing system for cash.

I have also seen guys at work, "10% disabled" with ingrown toenails. The ingrown toenail guy uses VA for his healthcare despite our company giving great benefits.

My father in law hit a mine in suez in 88 or 89? Lost his foot, hasn't collected disability. Has a good job.

There are legit disabled folks.
However, there are a frickload gaming the system. It's not wrong to point that out.

I know a guy that’s my older brothers age like this. He got popped with a lot of drugs and his dad pulled some strings and the judge let him go to the military. He got “hurt” during basic or shortly after and got discharged. Now he’s got a disabled veteran license plate and doesn’t do shite but maybe drive a grain cart for cash during the harvest. Dude is a grade A piece of shite.

My baw married a "disabled vet". She broke ankle during basic. Got discharged. Got pregnant before it healed. It healed a little fricked up.

100% disabled vet for life.
Free healthcare, like 6k/month.
From age 19, until she dies.

fricking joke.

Very close friend of mine gets: (reclassified to 100% disabled)

-$5,500/month
-Zero property taxes on their $750K house
-Unlimited doctor and surgeries although the VA sucks
-Able to run a physically demanding business

Was quite surprised tbh

Where I work it pays to be a disable vet. I know 100% that a lot of people take advantage of it.

There’s one guy that’s been out for 10 years, weighs 350+ pounds and got an increase for knee problems. When I finished my enlistment they basically told us we better get at least 3%

Anyone who says vets don’t play the system is either ignorant to what is really going on or they are lying. It’s a scam, no different than the people taking advantage of welfare or other special benefits

I know 3 DV's. 2 only served 1 tour never saw combat and are getting money for bad back and shoulder that they had before they went in.
The other served several tours in special forces and has been mental issues, cant sleep etc. He needs help and getting what he needs.

Like most things the gov't does there is plenty of waste and abuse. In this case 1 out of 3 deserve the help they are getting.
