I am replacing as they break. We have five units so I am going to take them one at a time. The newest on is from 2018. The oldest one is closer to 20 years old. The one that crapped the bed 10 years old and clearly the prior owners didn’t disclose that it was busted.

Find someone to put R-22 in your system in NYC.

410A refrigerant works in the place of R22 and is cheaper. That's what they did with mine.

I do too but over three separate properties.

You don't own that house, it owns you.

Just paid 3k for my outside unit, and it's a 3 ton. (in Alabama)

No it doesn't. You would have to change out the thermal expansion valve for r410. You cannot just put r410 into a r22 system.

So you only replaced the condenser, which is half of a system.

Correct. Sorry, I saw "compressor" and thought that was what the outside unit was called. Forgot it was condenser*

The whole unit would have been double that, and a bit more.

I used this in my training class this morning. Thanks for the huge laugh.

FYI only a moron would follow this advice. Lol

2 years ago I went top of the line 22 seer Trane 4 ton system. 5 days ago my Compressor burned up. Now I'm waiting for a new compressor which is supposedly 3-5 business days to get it in. All under warranty but it doesn't make me feel too good about Trane products anymore.

At the time I got it replaced... the Ruud system was 20 yrs old and only had 1 issue during it's lifetime and that was a replacement blower fan for the inside unit. It was undersized and failing to keep up with my cooling the house.

I think we paid over $15k for a full system install but they had to do quite a bit of duct work replacing as well.

You can get R22 20 pounds for $1k
R22b is $400 for 20 pounds.

It's a lie that "you can't get r22"

Don't know if it's true but I was told what use to be all made in America is now just assembled in America.

Inlaws are having to replace an entire system. Trane XL18i and handler and it has to be craned up to the roof. 15k

I'm sitting in front of a pallet of R22 ( but a poster stated you can use r410 instead of R22 which is not true). Over $1300 for 30lb drum. Anyone using r22 is totally wasting your money, might as well drive down the road and throw the cash out the window.

I'm warning everyone as of Jan 1 the new govt seer rating is law ( called seer2) and the only units you can sale ( that was made this year) have to be 18 seer minimum. The cost for seer2 units will be 20-25% more than todays units. If you have been waiting better change your system before Jan 1.

That's actually a good price for that unit and install.

I get the new stuff is more efficient.
But so many people I know with minor leaks were told to replace their system. When you can get 22 and 22b can be mixed with 22.

I’ve read several articles that say 14 SEER in the north and 15 SEER in the south.

My coil began slightly leaking in the attic about 3 years back. One small charge per season was fine and got me through the heat. She died on me last week. Got over 25 years on my unit. It was a 14 seer which was the second highest offered I believe back then.
Just ordered a 21 seer 4 ton unit. Will be installed in two weeks. Living off of window units right now.
